Self-driving cars (or autonomous cars or driverless cars) are vehicles capable of sensing their environment and navigating roads without human input. Companies like Tesla, Inc., Waymo, and Cruise are already making self-driving cars available to the public. Randall began making references to self-driving cars before 2012 and since then it has become a recurring theme. In comics such as 1559: Driving, these kinds of cars were the main cause of the joke. Elon Musk, one of the founders of Tesla, Inc. is also a recurring theme on xkcd.
