This is another comic about what is the right or wrong way to perform research when data is not adequate.

In the first frame, [[Cueball]] presents a report on a poster (two graphs with data points and possible fitted curves), admitting that all of the data is actually flawed. He doesn't explain if it's contrary to some outcome or revelation, or perhaps a systematic error in the data-gathering process.

From there, three different reactions to this is displayed in order of how good a decision they make based on this realization.

;Good
In the first scenario Cueball states they are no longer sure about the conclusions they had drawn from the flawed data. Drawing no conclusions when the data cannot be trusted is the only valid conclusion.

;Bad
In the second scenario Cueball then explains that after heavy manipulation ("doing a lot of math") of their flawed data, they decided they where actually fine. Since the data is flawed, manipulation will not make the data any more valid. Merely massaging the data is a dubious approach, however, if it can't be independently justified. Trying to find reasons why their bad data is actually correct, or pruning "bad" elements equally to maintain the status quo, effectively enforces any biases to support the model and expected outcome so that the "clean" data also fits well, but just as erroneously. While statistical analysis can be used to discard "flaws" (e.g. outliers) in a data set or establish lower expectations of accuracy in certain "streams of proof," it is not vaild to do this after the results don't match expectations. Since there are many different statistical methods and tests, trying one after the other and post-hoc selecting the one(s) more useful could almost guarantee that one will eventually confirm the expected outcome - even/especially if the data was unreliable.

;Very bad
In the third and final scenario Cueball explains that they scrapped all the flawed data. However, instead of trying to make some new data by correctly redoing research/measurements/tests, they instead trained an {{w|Artificial Intelligence}} (AI) to generate better data from nothing but a desire to match a target outcome. This is of course not real data, but just a simulation of data, selectively sieving statistical noise for desirable qualities. And since they are probably looking for a specific result, they are training the AI to generate data that supports this. This has nothing to do with research into the problem they are actually looking into and is very bad. They may gain some insights into programing the AI (see [[2173: Trained a Neural Net]]), however. AI is a recurring [[:Category:Artificial Intelligence|theme]] on xkcd.

In the title text, the results from the very bad approach is mentioned and the fact that they got the data they were looking for made clear when they state that ''We trained it to produce data that looked convincing, and we have to admit the results look convincing!'' The AI was of course trained to provide data that supports their initial theory, which is why they are so convinced of the promising results.

Or just late up on explain xkcd? Seems like the Monday comic first came up on Tuesday in many countries including those in Europe. But guess it was still Monday in the US, at least in the western parts? This explanation has some good ideas for what these things mean, but it goes into them in excessive detail, which doesn't leave a lot of room for other ideas to be included side-by-side. I think that might be common. I was just thinking that there are a lot of ways extra math is used to produce worse conclusions: as soon as you have to work more to find what is good, occam's razor says you are less likely to be relevant. Similarly there are a lot of ways that AI is used to work with data, but its power greatly surpasses its ability to reflect the underlying meaning of things. For example, the existing data can be extended without being scrapped, and look completely real in every known respect, but that doesn't mean that any new information is included in what is generated, since the only data to work with is what was already there. For some reason, this comic does not seem to be working now. It doesn't work on Chrome version 57.0.2987.133 on Windows 8 in Massachusetts, even though it worked a year ago on the very same computer with version 49.0.2623.112 of Chrome in the same location (showing "Snake" then); I tried it on Internet Explorer on the same computer (only because it's the only other browser I have on it), and it didn't work there either; my brother grudgingly agreed to try it on Firefox on his Ubuntu 14.04 machine (in the same room), and we got the same result.

No, I'm not talking about the void; here, there is absolutely no image at all. It seems to be the same as the experience that an anonymous user posted above about two and a half years ago:

Now, every time I tried on my computer, the browser said that the page was trying to load unsafe scripts. Maybe this is somehow linked to the fact that within the past few months, Randall (or more likely Davean) made all xkcd links secure (<nowiki>https://</nowiki>), and the now secure nature of the page could be blocking the location- and browser-sensing scripts in the comic itself. However, the comic still didn't work when I opted to "Load Unsafe Scripts", so maybe it isn't that simple.

Also, it might be helpful to note that [[User:Seipas|Seipas]] posted on here that he was having an issue that is probably quite similar to this one:

:It has to do with the browser getting scared off by "mixed active content." Mozilla's developers discuss it in more detail here: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Mixed_content]. In Firefox at least, there's a config change you can make (security.mixed_content.block_active_content) to override this and get the comic to display. (Well, kind of. I'm still getting "The Void," but I'm working on it.) Other browsers can probably be reconfigured likewise, though you should remember to change back when you're done to avoid security problems.. I cannot access XKCD from Netscape 4.7 (i.e. a version from the 1990s), it gives a messagebox "Netscape and this server cannot communicate securely because they have no common encryption algorithm(s)."

Now I can work out what's going on: XKCD is not allowing unencrypted connections / is redirecting plain HTTP requests to the HTTPS version, but the only versions of SSLTLS that NS4 supports are ancient, insecure and prudently not supported by the site itself.

Now, if we assume that it's talking about still using NS ''per se'', not 1990s NS: — the last version of Navigator was NS9, based on FF2.0. In FF2.0, I get "Firefox can't connect securely to xkcd.com because the site uses a security protocol which is not enabled." Looking in the options, it only offers two protocols (SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0), both of which are enabled.

The death star is a wild political computer virus that uses machine learning and falsified orders and is devastating communities internationally.

What

This is another analogy to how vaccines tend to work; essentially releasing a weak form of the virus into the body to give the immune system knowledge of it so it's prepared to stave off the real thing

Here the constructors of the death star dying is only natural considering how often cell death occurs in the human body. Cells which do not die when they're meant to are known as cancer cells.

What pro-vaxxers fail to notice of course is that the people in death star numero uno are very averse to being shot and blown up and doing so regardless is quite, in fact, rude. how would you feel if you were a death star and got blown up.

Was discontinued within three months after the program purchased ecstasy internationally, a likely stolen credit card, and a presumably fraudulent (but very high quality) Hungarian passport - in addition to some other suspect items of questionable legality.
