Explanation
A Thorne–Żytkow object is an object theorized by Kip Thorne and Anna Żytkow, which is a red giant or red supergiant with a Neutron star at its core. There have been no confirmed sightings, but HV 2112 and HV 11417, both in the Small Magellanic cloud, are strong candidates.

Cueball is asking for a grant for funding for research into these theoretical astral bodies, the implication being that they are asking funding for telescope time, or even an entirely new telescope, in order to make such investigations possible. However, the caption reveals that he is asking for something completely different: funding to create the object, with a slingshot. Normally, astrophysical science is an observational discipline, but the title of the comic (made explicit by the caption text) suggests that this is intended to be a 'practical' experiment to induce a TŻO into existence by actually sending a neutron star into our own Sun.

Cueball is complaining that no one is willing to fund this experiment to create the Thorne–Żytkow object for direct observation. This would be impractical, for several reasons. First, you would need to find (or create!) a neutron star and bring it here, which requires amounts of energy, mass, and precision that we have no current possibility of achieving. Secondly, having a neutron star anywhere near the Sun would most likely destroy the solar system, or at least, accelerate its transition to red giant which might result in Earth being engulfed by it.Actual citation needed Moreover, having a neutron star inside it would immediately turn the Sun into a red giant, which normally takes billions of years and will ruin the weather. The funding body, presumably based on Earth, would probably find the end result would not generate a favorable environmental impact statement, given the almost inevitable destruction of their planet.

A spin-off usually means something additional that was not originally planned. The title text in this comic is a two-layer joke on the phrase "spin-off", meaning that hitting the Sun off-center (from the right angle) would likely have many unintended consequences, but also cause the Sun to start rotating abnormally, due to the added angular momentum, in the same way as hitting a ball on the side makes it spin. A similar idea (the engulfment of a planet or companion star) has been proposed to explain the apparently anomalous rotation of the red supergiant Betelgeuse.

"Spin-off" could also refer to material being flung off the Sun due to the impact of the neutron star. If the right material is sent in certain directions, it could have useful, or more likely just 'interesting', properties.

Transcript
:[Cueball is standing on a circular podium with a screen behind him. He is holding his palm out towards an unseen audience. On the screen there is a large circle with a solid inner line and a ragged outer line. And then there are two much smaller circles also with solid inner lines and ragged outer lines. One of them is drawn just outside the large circle to the left. An arrow is pointing from this to the center of the large circle, breaking the large circle's edge. It points at the other small circle, which is drawn at the center of the large circle.]
:Cueball: A Thorne-Żytkow object is a hypothesized nested star — a red giant with a neutron star inside it.
:Cueball: So far, no TŻOs have been definitively observed, but your grant could help us change that.

:[Caption below the panel:]
:We're struggling to get funding for our project to slingshot a neutron star into the Sun.
Aren't there two missing ones: standard model+standard circumstances (i.e. remembering you have to have something to turn in and it's the night before the science fair) and novel theory+novel circumstances (i.e. what if the universe is actually a seven dimensional tuna salad sandwich?) ::Standard model+standard circumstances, in moderation, is an essential part of science. Repeating an experiment a few times helps show what the real results are. If anything, there tends to be an unfortunate bias to not repeating experiments enough (harder to get them funded/published than it should be). It becomes a standard model and standard circumstances by repetition. 172.70.206.209 07:15, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
I originally thought that Hairy was mapping every tree as in like a binary tree, and was covered in plants for some other, possibly related reason. Also, what's this about <blah>? 172.69.22.50 20:38, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
:Knowing Randall, this was a mathematical investigation, but Hairy got a little more "into the (initially mathematical) trees" than intended. Might be worth expanding on this, but it's (intentionally, thus humorously) vague so it could have a lot of different thoughts attached to it.
:As to the other bit:
:*Someone wrote a non sequitur trolling on that subject you mentioned, even though the comic has absolutely nothing to do with it (and the comments weren't exactly a notably intellectual analysis, anyway, even if it had been). Others fed the troll a bit, there was some editing done and then a resurgence (just as poorly done) that you got to see but had left of most of the early 'context' absent.
:*It's all readable in the page history. Not worth reading, IMO, but it's there. But now not here. Bye bye the whole (limited) discussion as a non-executive decision on my part.
:*I would not normally delete/edit others' comments from Talk (especially of regulars), but definitely more smoke than fire and more heat than light so no loss. If established users wish to create a subsection for it, and paste it all back in, they're welcome to and can easily do so. Until then, any other anon-IP or recently created username that starts up with another clear and irrelevent trolling should probably consider themselves fair game to be deleted again (and perhaps by actual named editors/admin), plus any purely troll-feeding replies that had only that relevence.
Mapping individual trees is an actual thing, and how to do that is a field of research. It's fairly reasonable to assume, though, that this may not have been exactly on top of Randall's mind.
I previously added a paragraph about Hairy's gender which then got removed because it was bloated by further edits. (At least, I hope that was the reason.) I've reintroduced a more concise explanation that should stand the test of time as it is both interesting and important IMHO. Please note that I have deliberately not used the term 'non-binary' as this is not a catch-all term for any gender-diverse individual. I like the term 'gender-expansive' but not everyone knows what that means. :-)172.70.91.254 18:34, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
:Trouble is, the absolutely most likely explanation is that it was a their-plural. Then that it's their-indetermined (by the speaker). The their-otherness (self-proclaimed alternate-gender) option is a valid but still exceptional reason, in comparison. If in doubt about which decision was made, we could fall back to number two (if we're aware enough about sensitivity), but only because we're not yet entrusted with the original reason, not knowing about their knowledge (or otherwise), and attitude, of Hairy's particular scenario. Until someone says "my pronouns are...", you could just as much annoy them by hypercorrecting the common assumptions. (There are certain types I wouldn't mind annoying, because one needn't tolerate intolerance, but there's not just that to consider.) ::I disagree. Given the scale of the endeavour as demonstrated by how dishevelled Hairy looks, it seems to me that the idea is that Hairy made that map *alone*. I guess it's possible that the title text is referring to multiple people, but I never interpreted it like that. Surfing (disambiguation) is a sport where the participant tries to stand or otherwise remain stable on a moving surface as long as possible. Traditionally the name "surfing" refers to riding a surfboard that is itself floating on the Wind wave as they crash into shore, but in colloquial English it is possible to "surf" other things such as a Crowd surfing, the floor of a moving bus, a subway car, or the Internet.
In this comic, Beret Guy is surfing the Earth's tectonic plates. Tectonic plates move very slowly compared to a normal surfing experience — so slowly, ordinary people perceive them to be stationary ground. But Beret Guy, in typical Beret Guy fashion, sees the broader picture in the most whimsical way possible and is now surfing the plates across the Earth's mantle below. He seems to be moving horizontally at about 4-5 cm/year (~1 m/20 yrs) which would put him on one of the moderately fast plates, at least relative to the more stable North American plate. For comparison, the fastest-moving plate, the Pacific Plate, would move about two meters in 20 years relative to the African Plate (which is used as the standard which all other plate motions are measured against).

While doing this he says "Radical", "Gnarly", and "Hang loose" which are exclamations commonly used among surfers. After 20 years, he is still standing there, having moved about one meter with the continental plate. This is thus another of the Strange powers of Beret Guy — being able to stay in place for 20 years. This was also seen in 1088: Five Years, where he waited five years to find out where he would be after that time.

The title text refers to riding the barrel, in which one surfs inside the hollow part of a breaking wave, while a wipe out means you get swept off your surf board. If you wipe out in a barrel, you most likely submerge under water. If this were possible in tectonic surfing, you would be stuck under a tectonic plate and you would have to wait until the material you're trapped in erodes. In reality, there's no such thing as breaking waves in plate tectonics, but there are Fold (geology) that can be seen as similar to the way that turbulent water mixes. Things do get trapped when two tectonic plates collide in a process called subduction, in which one plate disappears below another.

Of note, Beret Guy is mentioned to have a "subduction license", as seen in |this comic: 1388: Subduction License, so he may have some recourse in such a situation. Due to said license, he would survive and reemerge from the continental plate barrel in a million years time.
Explanation
By depicting how unimpressive the superhero Superman would be if his increase in powers, when compared to humans, were the same as the moon's increase in apparent size during a supermoon, Randall points that the use of the term supermoon is an exaggeration. This comic was released two days after such a supermoon and there was a hype in 2014 because the were three supermoons in a row as NASA said.

This comic was posted one day after a supermoon, an informal astronomical event where a full moon occurs when it is closest to earth, causing the moon to appear 10% brighter and about 7% larger. This is due to the apsidal precession of moon's elliptic orbit which has an orbital eccentricity of about 0.0549. The conditions for a supermoon happen once every 411 days, and the loose definition of the term means that the supermoon lasts for about two or three full moons.

Returning to the not-so-Superman, the average American adult man is 69 inches tall, with a standard deviation of 2.9 inches. Not-so-Superman, at an assumed 74 inches (188 cm) tall, is within the 94th percentile - certainly a tall man, but by no means phenomenal. Basketball players, by way of example, are often more than 80 inches tall. "7% stronger" (most likely a reference to how the supermoon is 7% larger) is a bit harder to quantify, but it communicates "not actually impressive" to the reader all the same. For example, if an average man can lift 50 kg, the not-so-Superman would lift 53.5 kg.

The comic's title makes use of an asterisk that is being used as a wildcard. When using search queries an asterisk represents one or more characters. Therefore, Superm*n can represent the strings "Superman" and "Supermoon".

The title text refers makes this same comparison with Spider-Man. Spider-Man is capable of firing large amounts of webbing, can cling to surfaces with superhuman gripping abilities, and has a sixth sense, "spider sense", that warns him about impending danger. The title text describes trivially minimal versions of these powers, analogous to the trivial size and brightness difference between a "supermoon" and a normal full moon. This also shows a much more accurate depiction of an actual spider's abilities, where they can produce several inches of a thin web, not the unrealistic amounts depicted in use by Spider-Man.

Supermoon is also referenced in panel 25 of 1052: Every Major's Terrible and shortly thereafter in 1080: Visual Field. In both cases displaying the same distaste for the formulation. Although not as clearly as here. Since then other comics have referred to the term, see this list.

No idea why he's picked bunnies specifically, maybe that will become apparent in a future strip. Considering just this standalone comic, it seems to be a parody of apps that increasingly swamp the user with notifications about pointless things that one might imagine nobody would ever care about. In this instance, it might be imagined that few people would care about notifications for bunny sightings, but in the last pane it appears that someone truly does. This might compare with notifications for rare pokemon sightings in Pokémon Go (not provided in-app but there are groups on facebook etc. that alert users to rare pokemon / legendary raids) - with the difference that bunnies are extremely common. Also, is it significant that he specifically uses the word "buns" instead of "bunnies"? There may be a connection with the observation that they are just like little hopping loaves of bread.141.101.98.208 14:45, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
| titletext = Evolutionarily speaking, mushrooms are technically a type of ghost.
}}

Explanation
Cueball is looking at a mushroom contemplating how weird they are when Megan adds another layer to their weirdness by supplying the trivia that evolutionary, mushrooms are closer to the animal than to plants on the Tree of life (biology).

Both animals and fungi are part of the opisthokont group, while plants are in archaeplastida group with the algae. This surprises Cueball, as he like many other people is likely to think of mushrooms as plants as they are "grown" just like other crops. But what people with this misconception often fail to remember is that the edible mushrooms like Agaricus bisporus (or white mushroom) are farmed in caves without any sunlight, which is a prerequisite for any plant life, as all plants need to be able to use photosynthesis to grow, and thus needs sunlight.

Megan then walks away, and Cueball, after pondering the mushroom a while further, gets up and walks away too. But as soon as Cueball has his back turned the mushroom growls after him. Cueball spins around to look back at the now again silent mushroom. This is a bit of absurdist humor; while mushrooms are technically more animal-like than plant-like (eukaryotic organisms do not use photosynthesis) fungi are still so far removed from animals they wouldn't have any of the body parts needed to growl. Cueball's shock and astonishment is quite justified, and maybe it was just his imagination running wild after Megan's trivia.

The title text takes this further, by stating that mushrooms are technically a type of ghost. Arguably, since they arise from decaying remains. The title text may refer to 1475: Technically.

This comic was published later in the same week as the what if? 152, which referred a lot to strange records and trivia. It was the first what if? post in almost three months, the longest break between two posts during 2016 (and third longest of all time at the time of release). It is plausible that there is some a connection between said what if? and this comic, which is fitting due to the lack of common knowledge about mushroom genealogy.

Transcript
:[Cueball is squatting in front of a group of four mushrooms (two tiny, one small and one large), touching the top of the nearest and largest mushroom with a finger. This mushroom has several small dots, which becomes more visible in later panels. The other three mushrooms do not appear to have these dots. Megan is standing behind him looking on.]
:Cueball: Mushrooms are so weird.
:Megan: You know, evolutionarily, they're closer to being animals than to plants.

:[Megan starts walking away as Cueball now leans on the ground with the hand he touched the mushroom with. Only the large mushroom is visible in this and the rest of the panels.]
:Cueball: ...Really?
:Megan: Yup!

:[In a frame-less panel Cueball still squats in front of the mushroom, now resting his hand on his knees.]

:[Cueball stands up looking down at the mushroom.]

:[Cueball is walking away as the mushroom makes a sound indicated with several small lines emanating from the top of the mushroom along with a regular speech line.]
