}}
Explanation
On the 14th August 2013, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) issued a document about public naming of astronomical objects. It stated, "IAU fully supports the involvement of the general public, whether directly or through an independent organized vote, in the naming of planetary satellites, newly discovered planets, and their host stars."

The text above the image states the fact above and then notes that the IAU immediately regret this decision. As we can see from Cueball's question, from Ponytail's facepalm, and the fact that even Megan is speechless, the suggestions are appalling. It becomes even worse when Hairbun tells them that an automatic filter has already been applied to the results, one designed to remove inappropriate entries that don't meet certain criteria. This implies that the list would have been even worse if presented in its unfiltered form (as seen below in the table).

The naming document also contained, amongst other things, guidelines that suggested names should meet. These include stipulations such as "16 characters or less", "preferably one word", being "pronounceable (in as many languages as possible)", "not too similar to an existing name of an astronomical object", avoiding commercial names, and being "respectful of intellectual property". If we go down the list, we can see that many of Randall's suggestions do indeed violate the guidelines. Which is part of the joke as it reflects the tendency of internet submissions to ignore such softly suggested guidelines.

The randomness and inappropriateness of the suggested names reflects the commonly expected response from anonymous submitters on the internet. Many forums and contests that call for online response and do not apply strict control over the responses receive similar collections of random, inappropriate and obscure submissions that are often only tangentially related to the original subject. For example, Greenpeace held a naming contest for one of the whales recently tagged in their research and preservation campaign and even after selecting the finalists the online voting resulted in naming the whale "Mr. Splashypants". PepsiCo had even less restrictive controls in their marketing campaign that asked the internet to name a new flavour of Mountain Dew. They had to shut down the contest in order to avoid naming the new beverage "Hitler did nothing wrong" which was the current leader at the time and only marginally the most inappropriate of the top ten voted suggestions. Even more recently is the case of Boaty McBoatface, in which the internet decided to dub a British research vessel "Boaty McBoatface". The boat was given the name RRS Sir David Attenborough in the end, with its Autonomous Underwater Vehicle being called "Boaty McBoatface."

The document also states that naming suggestions may be sent to the email that Randall included in the title text.

! Star !! Planet !! Suggested Name !! Explanation
|-
| rowspan=7 | Gliese 667 || Gliese 667 Cb || Space Planet || A very unoriginal name; every planet is in space.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cc || PILF || Pun of MILF pornography, i.e. Planet I'd Like to Fuck. Planet c is a relatively hot planet, within the habitable zone.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cd || A Star || "A Star" is obviously a bad name for a planet. A* (pronounced "A star") is already used in in astronomy, for example the Milky Way's black hole core is Sagittarius A*. "A star" is also the name for the character asterisk and the name of the popular A* search algorithm in computer science.
|-
|Gliese 667 Ce || e'); DROP TABLE PLANETS;-- || A reference to SQL injection, riffing off of comic 327, which featured a schoolboy named <code>Robert'); DROP TABLE students;--</code>. The idea here is that the IAU would enter the name into their system and promptly lose all of their data pertaining to planets. Note that Planet e is located in the habitable zone of the star system.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cf || Blogosphere || rowspan = 2 | Weird blog-related terms are a recurring theme in xkcd. See, for instance, comic 181.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cg || Blogodrome
|-
|h || Earth || Planet candidate h is about the mass of the Earth, and described as "tantalizing": A dynamically-packed planetary system around GJ with three super-Earths in its habitable zone. See also (1231: Habitable Zone).
|-
| rowspan=5 | Tau Ceti || b || Sid Meier's Tau&nbsp;Ceti&nbsp;B || This refers to the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
|-
| c || Giant Dog Planet || VY Canis Majoris is one of the largest known stars at our galaxy and belongs to the constellation Canis Major, Latin for "greater dog". The constellation further contains Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, also called "Dog Star".
|-
|d || Tiny Dog Planet || cf. Canis Minor, Latin for "lesser dog", another constellation.
|-
|Tau Ceti e || Phil Plainet || A reference to Phil Plait, a.k.a. The Bad Astronomer.
|-
|Tau Ceti f || Unicode Snowman || The Unicode character <span style="font-size: 200%">☃</span> may be a reference to the planet's estimated surface temperature of -40&nbsp;°C (-40&nbsp;°F). However, this name would be pronounced differently (being a symbol, not a word or name) in different languages. Planets in our solar system are assigned to Astronomical symbols like <span style="font-size:150%">&#x2641;</span> for Earth or <span style="font-size:150%">&#x2642;</span> for Mars. (A unicode snowman is also referenced in Randall's book What If, where it is keymapped to a laptop.)
|-
| Gliese 832 || Gliese 832 b || Asshole Jupiter || This massive planet orbits a red dwarf star at the longest known period of 3416 days at this category.
|-
| rowspan=6 | Gliese 581 || Gliese 581 b || Waist-deep Cats || Likely a reference to Lolcats, which are a series of images of cats captioned with poorly-written and/or spelled English.
|-
| Gliese || Planet #14 || About 200th discovered exoplanet (in 2007); reported to be the first potentially Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of its star, though that is in doubt now. The joke might be that like "Space Planet", "Planet #14" is a generic and unoriginal name. Also note that this is the 15th entry in the table so the numbering is Zero-based_numbering.
An interesting (?) coincidence is that the 14th and 15th Definition of planet#Minor planets (then called asteroids) were discovered in 1851; see see List of minor planets: 1–1000. If they were to be counted among the planets of the Solar System, as was sometimes done then, the 14th known planetary body would be 7 Iris (discovered in 1847, a year before Neptune).
|-
|Gliese 581 d || Ballderaan || A wikt:balls on the planet Alderaan from the Star Wars universe.
|-
|Gliese 581 e || Eternia Prime || Eternia is a fictional planet, venue of the Masters of the Universe animated series and toy collection.
|-
| Gliese 581 f || Taupe Mars || Kim Stanley Robinson's award-winning Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars after various stages of terraformation). Taupe is a brownish-grey colour.
|-
|Gliese || Jelly-Filled Planet || Possibly a reference to the conjecture that this tidally locked planet has an isolated habitable zone under the substellar point, akin to the pocket of jelly in a jelly doughnut.
|-
| rowspan=2 | Epsilon Eridani || Epsilon Eridani b || Skydot || SkyDOT is the Sky Database for Objects in Time-Domain run by LANL for the U.S. Dept. of Energy and includes data for Epsilon Eridani that can be used to constrain the orbital parameters of &epsilon; Eri b. It may also refer to how objects in space may appear as bland, bright dots in the night sky.
|-
| Epsilon Eridani c#Planet_c || Laser Noises || A Laser does not produce Noise (electronics) in the signal sense; it only works at a well-defined frequency. In science fiction films, however, laser weapon discharges are usually accompanied by sound ("pew pew" or the like). Sun-like Epsilon Eridani became a popular setting for science fiction after its publicity as a target of the Project Ozma experiment.
|-
| rowspan=2 | Gliese 176 || Gliese 176 b || Pandora || The mythological name Pandora fulfills most of IAU's guidelines and has been popular for planets in science fiction; most recently and famously is Pandora (Avatar) of James Cameron's Avatar (film) (although actually it is not a planet but just a moon of a gas giant in Alfa Centauri A). It is also a hellish planet from Frank Herbert's Frank Herbert bibliography#WorShip novels series of novels, a jungle planet in Brothers Strugatsky's Noon Universe and the planet used in Borderlands (video game).
|-
| c || Pantera || Named for the Pantera, which itself was named after an Italian sports car, the De Tomaso Pantera.
|-
| Kepler-61 || Kepler-61b || GoldenPalace.com || A gambling website, known for GoldenPalace.com (like forehead tattoos, species names...).
|-
! colspan=4 | (right column)
|-
| rowspan=3 | Upsilon Andromedae || Upsilon Andromedae c || Stampy || The name of the elephant from the Simpsons episode Bart Gets an Elephant.
|-
|Upsilon Andromedae d || Moonchild || The name Bastian gives the Childlike Empress in The Neverending Story.
|-
|Upsilon Andromedae e || Ham Sphere || HamSphere is a Amateur radio simulator program. Ham radio uses designated radio frequencies for non-commercial exchange of messages and more. A pun of Hemisphere.
|-
| rowspan=3 | . Eridani || b || Cosmic Sands || style="font-family:'Comic Sans MS', 'Comic Sans'" | A pun on the name of the font Comic Sans. (<span style="font-family:papyrus">See also: 590: Papyrus.</span>)
|-
| c || Legoland || Legoland is a chain of theme parks owned by the Lego Group.
|-
|d || Planet with Arms || A reference to the early covers of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Could also be a reference to "Birds with Arms" meme.
|-
| HD 85512 || HD 85512 b || Lax Morality || Possibly a parody of science fiction in which certain planets are suggested to be uniformly... lax in morals (i.e. full of sex, drugs, etc.). See http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Planetville and related.
|-
| rowspan=6 | HD 40307 || HD 40307 b || Good Planet || Similar to the above, except with good planets. May also be yet another non-descriptive name, like "Space Planet" and "Planet #14".
|-
|HD || ProblemLand || See above.
|-
|HD 40307 d || Slickle || This is a reference to "The Petals Fall Twice", which was made as a humorous example of bad fan-fiction. The word itself is a portmanteau of "slowly", "licked", and "tickled".
|-
|HD 40307 e || Spare Parts || This suggests that the planet is "worthless" or "junk". This is false, of course. May be a reference to the fact it is a planet with nothing much different from the other planets.
|-
|HD 40307 f || New Jersey VI || Refers to the state of New Jersey; may be an insult to either.
|-
|HD || How Do I Join the&nbsp;IAU || This implies that the user "got lost" on the IAU website and thought that the "planet name suggestion" input was for general queries.
|-
| rowspan=3 | Gliese 163 || b || Neil Tyson's Mustache || Neil deGrasse Tyson is a famous American astrophysicist and science communicator who does maintain a distinguished mustache.
|-
|Gliese || help@gmail.com || Similar to "How Do I Join the IAU", this implies that the user confused the "planet suggestion" text box for a new email they are trying to send
|-
|d || Hair-Covered Planet || Refers to the well-known Hairy ball theorem of topology.
|-
| Pi Mensae || Pi Mensae b || Moon Holder || Jupiter has more than 60 discovered moons, and still counting... A planet ten times more massive must also be a Moon Holder.
|-
| HD 189733 || HD 189733 b || Permadeath || A well-characterized "Hot Jupiter" at a temperature range of 973 ± 33 K to 1,212 ± 11 K. The name refers to the feature of Permanent death common in many RPGs and roguelikes.
|-
| Kepler-22 || Kepler-22 b || Blue Ivy || Blue Ivy Carter is the daughter of musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
|-
| Kepler-3284 || b || Blainsley || A very small town in the United Kingdom, south of Edinburgh. Possibly chosen due to its insignificance?
|-
| Kepler-3255 || b || Unicorn Thresher || As far as we can tell, Kepler-3255b is in the vicinity of the constellation Monoceros, aka the Unicorn. Also a pun on Threshing machine.
|-
| Kepler-2418 || b || Spherical Discworld || The Discworld is the fictional setting for British author Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of humorous fantasy novels; it consists of a large disc supported by four elephants themselves standing on top of a turtle flying through space. "Spherical Disc" would be an oxymoron.
|-
| Kepler-1686 || KOI-1686.01 || Emergency Backup Earth || This candidate planet has an Earth Similarity Index of 0.89, making it one of the most habitable Kepler object of interest. The name suggests that it could be used as a backup in case something happened to our current planet.
|-
| Kepler-3010 || b || Feeeoooooooop || Possibly the onomatopoeia for something getting sucked into a black hole.
|-
| Kepler-4742 || b || Liz || ...Just a regular name (for a person, not a planet). Maybe a reference to the pet lizard on the Magic School Bus.
There is a small arrow pointing from the word "Planet" down to the second column of the table. The headings in the comic are not inside the table as they are here below. The text at the bottom of the left list seems to continue on below, at least the last entry is cut below the middle, although it is still easy to read. Similarly the text at the top right list, seems to continue from above, the top entry missing the very top of the text. This is as if the list is much longer and here is just shown part of the list. To further indicate this the first entry in the right list begins at "c" instead of at "b" which is else the case for all other instances.]
}}

Explanation
|-
| rowspan=7 | Gliese 667 || Gliese 667 Cb || Space Planet || A very unoriginal name; every planet is in space.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cc || PILF || Pun of MILF pornography, i.e.
|Gliese 667 Cf || Blogosphere || rowspan = 2 | Weird blog-related terms are a recurring theme in xkcd. See, for instance, comic 181.
The constellation further contains Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, also called "Dog Star".
|-
|Tau Ceti f || Unicode Snowman || The Unicode character <span style="font-size: 200%">☃</span> may be a reference to the planet's estimated surface temperature of -40&nbsp;°C (-40&nbsp;°F). | Gliese 832 || Gliese 832 b || Asshole Jupiter || This massive planet orbits a red dwarf star at the longest known period of 3416 days at this category.
|-
| rowspan=6 | Gliese 581 || Gliese 581 b || Waist-deep Cats || Likely a reference to Lolcats, which are a series of images of cats captioned with poorly-written and/or spelled English.
|-
| Gliese || Planet #14 || About 200th discovered exoplanet (in 2007); reported to be the first potentially Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of its star, though that is in doubt now.
|-
|Gliese 581 d || Ballderaan || A wikt:balls on the planet Alderaan from the Star Wars universe.
|-
|Gliese 581 e || Eternia Prime || Eternia is a fictional planet, venue of the Masters of the Universe animated series and toy collection.
|-
| Gliese 581 f || Taupe Mars || Kim Stanley Robinson's award-winning Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars after various stages of terraformation).
|-
| Epsilon Eridani c#Planet_c || Laser Noises || A Laser does not produce Noise (electronics) in the signal sense; it only works at a well defined frequency.
|-
| Kepler-61 || Kepler-61b || GoldenPalace.com || A gambling website, known for GoldenPalace.com (like forehead tattoos, species names...).
|-
|HD 40307 e || Spare Parts || This suggests that the planet is "worthless" or "junk".
|-
| HD 189733 || HD 189733 b || Permadeath || A well-characterized "Hot Jupiter" at a temperature range of 973 ± 33 K to 1,212 ± 11 K. The name refers to the feature of Permanent death common in many RPGs and roguelikes.
|-
| Kepler-22 || Kepler-22 b || Blue Ivy || Blue Ivy Carter is the daughter of musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
|-
| Kepler-3284 || b || Blainsley || A very small town in the United Kingdom, south of Edinburgh.
}}

Explanation
|-
| rowspan=7 | Gliese 667 || Gliese 667 Cb || Space Planet || A very unoriginal name; every planet is in space.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cc || PILF || Pun of MILF pornography, i.e.
|-
|Gliese 667 Cf || Blogosphere || rowspan = 2 | Weird blog-related terms are a recurring theme in xkcd. See, for instance, comic 181.
|-
| c || Giant Dog Planet || VY Canis Majoris is one of the largest known stars at our galaxy and belongs to the constellation Canis Major, Latin for "greater dog". The constellation further contains Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, also called "Dog Star".
|-
|Tau Ceti e || Phil Plainet || A reference to Phil Plait, a.k.a.
|-
| rowspan=6 | Gliese 581 || Gliese 581 b || Waist-deep Cats || Likely a reference to Lolcats, which are a series of images of cats with captioned with poorly-written and/or spelled English.
|-
| Gliese || Planet #14 || About 200th discovered exoplanet (in 2007); reported to be the first potentially Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of its star, though that is in doubt now.
|-
|Gliese 581 d || Ballderaan || A wikt:balls on the planet Alderaan from the Star Wars universe.
|-
|Gliese 581 e || Eternia Prime || Eternia is a fictional planet, venue of the Masters of the Universe animated series and toy collection.
|-
| Gliese 581 f || Taupe Mars || Kim Stanley Robinson's award-winning Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars after various stages of terraformation).
|-
| Epsilon Eridani c#Planet_c || Laser Noises || A Laser does not produce Noise (electronics) in the signal sense; it only works at a well defined frequency.
|-
| Kepler-61 || Kepler-61b || GoldenPalace.com || A gambling website, known for GoldenPalace.com (like forehead tattoos, species names...).
|-
|Upsilon Andromedae d || Moonchild || The name Bastian gives the Childlike Empress in The Neverending Story.
|-
|Upsilon Andromedae e || Ham Sphere || HamSphere is a Amateur radio simulator program. Ham radio uses designated radio frequencies for non-commercial exchange of messages and more. A pun of Hemisphere.
|-
|-
| HD 85512 || HD 85512 b || Lax Morality || Possibly a parody of science fiction in which certain planets are suggested to be uniformly... lax in morals (i.e. full of sex, drugs, etc.). See http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Planetville and related.
|-
The word itself is a portmanteau of "slowly", "licked", and "tickled".
|-
|HD 40307 e || Spare Parts || This suggests that the planet is "worthless" or "junk". This is false, of course. May be a reference to the fact it is a planet with nothing much different from the other planets.
|-
|HD 40307 f || New Jersey VI || Refers to the state of New Jersey; may be an insult to either.
|-
| HD 189733 || HD 189733 b || Permadeath || A well-characterized "Hot Jupiter" at a temperature range of 973 ± 33 K to 1,212 ± 11 K. The name refers to the feature of Permanent death common in many RPGs and roguelikes.
|-
| Kepler-22 || Kepler-22 b || Blue Ivy || Blue Ivy Carter is the daughter of musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
|-
| Kepler-3284 || b || Blainsley || A very small town in the United Kingdom, south of Edinburgh.

:[The table is in two separate columns, but there is only headings over the left, so the right column is a direct continuation of the left. In the table it is mentioned when the right column begins.
}}

Explanation
While searching for extrasolar planets this gullible astronomer is very excited because he believes he has found a planet in a star's habitable zone, with oceans and visible weather. From these observations, he has determined that it is quite likely to have life on it, which would be a major groundbreaking discovery.

The caption explains, however, that someone has used a mirror as a prank to fool the astronomer, so he is in fact looking at a reflection of the Earth.

The title text goes on says that the astronomer would also be able to see the reflection of his telescope, which would convince him that there definitely is intelligent life on the other planet, looking straight back at him no less!

Pedantic Comments
There are quite a number of issues (listed below) with the practical implementation of this prank, though of course they don't matter much in terms of the joke itself

*The telescopes used for this type of research are designed to view faint, distant objects. In the images that they produce, objects the size of telescopes are not visible. Therefore, the astronomer would not see the reflection of the telescope.
*The telescopes have a motor that moves them to compensate for earth's rotation, so that they stay pointed on the same part of the sky. This means that the telescope would not stay pointed at the mirror. The prankster would have to move the mirror in a very precise way to maintain the illusion.
*For the astronomer to have ascertained that the planet is in a star's habitable zone means that the astronomer observed the planet to be the size of Earth and observed the distance between the planet (Earth) and its star (the Sun), and the approximate size of that star. However, in a mirror at any reasonable distance from the Earth, up to several times the distance of the moon, the Earth would appear to be larger than the Sun.
*For the relative sizes of the Earth and Sun to be correct in the reflection, the mirror would have to be as far from Earth as the Earth was from the Sun. But even pointing to a mirror at a distance of the moon would require a very large one, probably more than one hundred kilometers (sixty miles) in diameter.
*A professional astronomer should be able to realize nearly instantaneously that they're not looking at an Earth-like, extrasolar planet (as should anyone, in fact, who is familiar with even the basic arrangement of Earth's continents and oceans), but instead Earth itself.
*A telescope of this size, or indeed any one employing a solid mirror rather than a massive disk of dust in space, could never see an extrasolar planet with this level of detail without unsurmountable engineering issues.

}}

Explanation
White Hat is fond of good wine, and he can probably distinguish slight differences in different types of wine, perhaps being the type that attends wine tasting parties. He doesn't like the cheap wine that Cueball has served for him (implying a cheap wine cannot be a good one, a statement most wine enthusiasts passionately agree with), looking with disgust at the label of the offending bottle.

On the other hand, Cueball doesn't have a preference; all of them taste the same for him, so presumably he gets the cheaper ones. White Hat tells Cueball that if he just tried some really good wine and paid more attention he would discover a whole new world.

Cueball's answer is the main message of the comic. He says that wine is no different from anything else in this respect, and makes a list starting with the wine but then going past house music, fonts, ants, ending with Wikipedia:Signatures and Canadian surrealist porn. His point being if you spend enough time focusing on any one subject, then you'll become a snobby connoisseur on that topic.

White Hat tries to defend wine by saying that some things have more depth than others (wine being among them), but Cueball challenges him on this by choosing something as obscure as 500 pictures of Joe Biden, the famously gaffe-prone former Vice President of the United States alongside Barack Obama, eating a sandwich as an example. He claims that if people were locked up in a box with those pictures for a year, they would end up being connoisseurs with the same vehemence regarding the best picture as wine tasters can be about the best wine.

White Hat claims that this is an exaggeration, but Cueball takes this as a challenge so in the last panel, apparently White Hat and Cueball are actually running this experiment to see if they will end up concentrating on slight differences among the pictures of Joe Biden eating a sandwich, just in the same way that White Hat concentrates on slight differences among different kinds of wine. The result of the experiment is clearly going to Cueball's side, the discussion being mainly between the importance of mayo or the light through lettuce from the sandwiches.

This mentality may also be applied to online groups based on any subject (such as television shows, films, and other hobbies and interests), where arguments and vehement, stubborn opinions are common despite the fairly unimportant subject.

The title text presents the same idea in a different wording. The "scale of our brains" refers to a concept similar to Richard Dawkins' Middle World, where things too small (say, smaller than the point of a pin) or too big (bigger than what we can see from a mountaintop) are just out of our comprehension, so the things our brains understand must be neither too small nor too big, i.e. the "middle world".

However, the title text goes further in this idea: When we find things too big (like the distance to the Moon), we shrink it so that it fits into the "middle world" we're used to. Conversely, when we find things too small (say, a mote of dust), we expand it for the same reason. In a quite similar way, if all we have is pictures of Joe Biden eating a sandwich, we "resize" that subject so that we can fill books with the details about the pictures.

Transcript
:[White Hat is holding a wine glass down in one hand and holding a bottle of wine up in front of him with the other hand. He is looking at the label and talking with Cueball standing next to him with his own filled wine glass in one hand. He is looking down at the glass.]
:White Hat: How do you stand this cheap wine?
:Cueball: Wine all tastes the same to me.

:[Close-up of White Hat.]
:White Hat: You've just never had good wine. If you paid more attention, you'd realize there's a whole world here.

:[Close-up on Cueball, who spreads his arms out, resulting in the wine in the glass sloshing so much that part of the wine is above the rim of the glass, some even hanging over the edge and a spray droplet hanging above the sloshing liquid.]
:Cueball: But that's true of anything! Wine, house music, fonts, ants, Wikipedia signatures, Canadian surrealist porn—
:Cueball: Spend enough time with any of them and you'll become a snobby connoisseur.

:[This panel has no border and is next to but aligned further down than the first three panels. It shows a zoom out of both White Hat and Cueball again. White Hat now has both glass and bottle held down at his side. Cueball holds his glass down, but tilted away from him. A small puddle of wine is on the floor next to Cueball.]
:White Hat: But some things do have more depth than others.
:Cueball: If you locked people in a box for a year with 500 still frames of Joe Biden eating a sandwich, by the end they'd be adamant that some were great and some were terrible.
:White Hat: You're exaggerating.
:Cueball: Oh, really?

:[This panel is below the feet of the two characters from the previous panel. It goes further to the left than those two, and is wider than the previous panels, but it does not go much past the middle, so there is a blank white space to the left of this panel, below the first and most of the second panel. It shows a box, with two star burst on the surface from where two voices emanate from the inside. Over the top left of the panels frame is a small frame with a caption:]
:A year later:
:The voice from left side of the box: Sure, most closed-mouth frames are boring, but in #415, the way the man's jaw frames the mayo on his hand is pure perfection, and—
:The voice from right side of the box: What a surprise- you praising a mayo frame. Listening to you, I'd think there was nothing else in The Sandwich.
:The voice from right side of the box: Frankly, the light hitting J.B.'s collar through the lettuce would put #242 in my top ten even if he had no mayo on his hand at all.

Trivia
*Specialized interests and the people involved in them are used again, with ants being the subject of 1610: Fire Ants, typefaces in 590: Papyrus and 736: Cemetery, plastic straws in 1095: Crazy Straws and porn-video quality in 598: Porn.
*In 1534: Beer, Cueball also argue slight differences in alcohol brands don't make much difference (in 915 "Wine all tastes the same to me."; in 1534, "maybe we should just admit that all beer tastes kind of bad and everyone's just pretending?") and people just pretend due to social pressure.
By the way, the current explanation says it's pinging c4.xkcd for updates.
From the javascript source, it looks like there's more than one server for this:
var SERVERS = ["http://c0.xkcd.com", "http://c1.xkcd.com", "http://c2.xkcd.com", "http://c3.xkcd.com", "http://c4.xkcd.com", "http://c5.xkcd.com", "http://c6.xkcd.com", "http://c7.xkcd.com"];
So that would be c0 to c7

Unfortuantely, as I had suggested, it seems that we cannot grab all the images beforehand :(
The javascript only fetches a json, which actually gives image name. So there's a server side script running which generates the paths to actual images. The javascript just shows it..
You can see the json here.
Where is Randall getting his info? His news is the most current I can find - anyone have a good link to up-to-the-minute status reporting like Randall is providing, preferably with more detail? --Nipchee (talk) 18:08, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
On a related note - what exactly is the distinction between "impact" and "landing" other than the perhaps intent? Is the result factored in as well? Where is the threshold between the two? -- Brettpeirce (talk) 19:10, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

I'd say it's more to do with the level of control. An impact is when an object forcibly hits something else, a landing is when it's directed and doesn't result in 10 years of wasted effort and money. --141.101.104.15 20:27, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
p.s. The vertical sprawl here (particularly in the Frame by Frame section) is really ugly. It should be subdivided and/or columnized like in 1190: Time. Frankie
:I doubt it's over yet. Also, it's actually a bit annoying to do multiple columns of homogenous data a la time, and those were done post-hoc. Subdivision and collapsing is a thing that could happen though. I love the GIF, good work, but is there any way it could be slowed down about 1/4 to 1/2 a second longer for a few frames, espicaly while the lander is landing. It is hard to catch all the jokes. Not all Frames need to be the same speed. 108.162.216.209 13:40, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
Not convinced there's any special reference to Hitchhiker's here. People seem to believe that "space whale art" was popular in the 1970s, and we know there were space whales in fiction long before the Guide, at least in Robert F. Young's series of stories published in genre magazines like F&SF and If starting in 1962, and in Pinocchio in Outer Space, an animated feature film from 1965. Pesthouse (talk) 23:09, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
:Might also be a reference to the second episode of "Futurama" — title: "The Series Has Landed". In that episode there is an amusement park on the moon with animated robots dressed as whalers (which is itself a parody of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction) singing "We're whalers on the moon; we carry a harpoon; but there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales; and sing our whaling tune."108.162.216.94 09:35, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

"Since the event is over, and the images don't show the rebounds, we can guess that Randall made all or most of the drawings before the landing." - I disagree with this statement. Between 16:35 and 16:55 you can clearly see Philae settle (stop moving), jostle, and settle again. You may have to watch the GIF closely to notice it. By the way, the current explanation says it's pinging c4.xkcd for updates.
From the javascript source, it looks like there's more than one server for this:
var SERVERS = ["http://c0.xkcd.com", "http://c1.xkcd.com", "http://c2.xkcd.com", "http://c3.xkcd.com", "http://c4.xkcd.com", "http://c5.xkcd.com", "http://c6.xkcd.com", "http://c7.xkcd.com"];
