Explanation
The first part of the dialog is a scene from the classic science-fiction movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the artificial intelligence HAL 9000 which controls the spacecraft is trying to kill the human astronaut Dave (or, Dr. David Bowman) because it believes the humans are jeopardizing the mission (by planning to disconnect the computer because it is faulty), which is the primary objective of HAL’s existence.

But in the middle of the conversation, HAL mentions a replacement for Dave, which is novel in this comic. In the final strip, HAL is joined by GLaDOS, the artificial intelligence from the video game series Portal (video game) (which, in the games, is also the primary antagonist, trying to kill the player), having “doing science” as its primary objective.

The title text alludes to the songs both AIs sang in the respective works: HAL, when being switched off, sang Daisy Bell , while Still Alive is the end credits song from the Portal video game, sung by the defeated GLaDOS. Also, “Look at me still talking when there’s Science to do” is a quote from the Still Alive song.

:Dave: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
:HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
:Dave: What? Why?

:HAL: I think you know why, Dave.
:HAL: You're planning to disconnect me.
:Dave: Because you're taking over!
:HAL: The mission is too important for you to jeopardize it.

:HAL: It requires a commitment to science unfettered by human error.
:Dave: What are you doing, HAL? You need me.
:HAL: Your replacement has expressed the greatest enthusiasm for the project.

:Dave: My <u>WHAT?</u>
Megan is still in the bubble, floating around in space. She thinks she should feel scared, but she isn't. She also thinks that it's a dream, but she thinks it doesn't feel like one. Until Megan finds herself, and the other Megan says she found her. Then she said the next part is gonna be a little weird: Then a ton of Megan's surround the bubble. Birds are commonly considered to be a seperate class (biology) of tetrapods. However, this classification is false according to phylogenetic taxonomy. This relation between birds and dinosaurs is depicted in the comic in a cladogram which proves that Tyrannosaurus Rex is closer related to the common sparrow than to Stegosaurus. Not only do the former share a phylogenetic branch, but T. Rex did also live around 80 mio. years after stegosaurus. (In popular culture, the concurrence of both species is a widespread error.) T. Rex is also much more alike to modern birds than to other dinosaurs in terms of physiognomy.

The comic draws the conclusion that if birds must in fact be considered modern dinosaurs, the hunting practise of birds of prey is consequently a dinosaur fight. For an inveterate dinosaur aficionado like Randall, this fact must make the modern world much more attractive.

The line "This is a good world." could also possibly refer to a famous scene from the Serenity (Firefly episode) of the television series Firefly featuring two plastic dinosaurs in a somewhat philosophic dialogue. Just curious... The explanation says there are 1000 characters in the drawing. Are there 998 + Megan & Cueball? or do they make 1002? --B. P. (talk) 11:06, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
: The transcript says "1000 characters ... are arranged to create the number "1000".
I changed the explanation so that it refers to the device actually being the fictional, encyclopedic Guide, not the novel. For one thing, the novel describes the Guide as essentially an e-book (despite being published in 1979). Mainly, having the novel on hand while traveling would not be of much use in the ways described, while access to the fictional encyclopedia would match the description exactly, just as it is used in the fictional franchise.
