| titletext = I'm staring at the "doctor" section, and I can't help but feel like I've forgotten someone.
}}

==Explanation==
{{incomplete|Explain the specific groupings. }}
A {{w|Bracket (tournament)|tournament bracket}} shows the planned series of matchups in a tournament. In this comic Randall has shown a plan for a tournament between a wide range of cultural icons, both real and fictional, based mostly on similarities in their names. Various internet groups have speculated on who would win in a fight between characters from different films. It may be relevant that the film {{w|Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice}} is soon to be released where the two namesake {{w|superheros}}, {{w|Batman}} and {{w|Superman}}, fight against each other.

The individual starting pairings are generally based on common or similar given or surnames. Some adjacent brackets are "segued" by someone like Jeff Daniels who segues from a bracket of "Jeff"s into a bracket of "Daniels"es. The bracket itself is fairly arbitrary. Most initial matchups are pairs, although several are trios and there's a quadruplet in the Russels group, while a single entry, Beyoncé, is given a first- and second-round {{w|bye (sports)|bye}}. Most of the participants in the tournament are people with a few exceptions: {{w|Shallots}} (small onions), {{w|scallops}} (bivalve mollusks), and {{w|scallions}} (green onions) are similar sounding foods, therefore may be confusing for some individuals (perhaps including [[Randall]]). The final grouping on the lower right of the bracket features a several retail stores and a film.

The [[title text]] may be referring to {{w|Dr. Dre}}, particularly as a reference to his 2001 song "{{w|Forgot About Dre}}" or it could be a reference to {{w|Dr. Who}} where {{w|Asylum of the Daleks}} the Dalek's memory of The Doctor is wiped implying that Randall is a {{w|Dalek}}. Alternatively, the title text could simply be a reference to the large number of pop culture personas that include the word "Doctor", such as {{w|Gregory House|Doctor House}}, {{w|Mehmet Oz|Dr. Oz}}, {{w|Phil McGraw|Dr. Phil}}, {{w|Dr. Watson}}, {{w|Emmett Brown|"Doc" Brown}}, {{w|Dr. Seuss}}, {{w|Dr Pepper}}, {{w|Doctor Doom}}, and {{w|List of fictional doctors|many others}} (or, in fact, [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/futurama-zoidberg-why-not-zoidberg why not Dr. Zoidberg]?). Another possibility is that the [[title text]] is supposed to make the readers ask themselves "{{w|Doctor who}}?" Though "The Doctor" is already listed, this could refer to either {{w|The Doctor (Doctor Who)|the Doctor from ''Doctor Who''}} or {{w|Doctor (Star Trek: Voyager)|the ''Star Trek: Voyager'' character}}. Notably, while the Doctor in "Doctor Who" is technically one character, the Doctor has currently been played on screen by 13 different actors. The mythos of the Doctor Who even includes individual incarnations of the Doctor interacting with each other; knowing they are the same person, yet often expressing annoyance when grouped together. So perhaps Randall is implying that to just include the Doctor as one individual is not an accurate representation of this character.

The names and other entries in the bracket are:
Leap seconds have nothing to do with the length of the year: corrected. [[Special:Contributions/108.162.249.162|108.162.249.162]] 07:49, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

"Leap seconds normally account for the differences in the length of our 24 hour day and the time taken for the world to rotate 360 degrees on its axis" - this sentence mixes two unrelated concepts. First, a day is not a rotation of 360 degrees. Because the Earth also orbit the sun, the rotation from noon one day to noon the following day is a bit more than 360 degrees (360.9856 or so) (rotation measured relative to the stars) - this is why constellations appear to move throughout the year. Second, leap seconds are required because the leap day corrections of the Gregorian calendar are good, but not perfect, at matching the difference between Earth orbits (years) and Earth rotations (days). Every so often, a small correction is required. The corrections are not regular because the causes of the drift are numerous: tidal effects, orbital eccentricity, the underlying (small) flaws in the calendar, etc. I have not made any changes in the explanation. --[[Special:Contributions/141.101.104.66|141.101.104.66]] 08:41, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

==Explanation==
{{Incomplete|Explanation required.}}

{{w|GeoGuessr}} is a game using {{w|Google Street View|StreetView}} images, which drops the player in a random location and challenges them to work out where they are. It is also referenced in [[1214: Geoguessr]].

"Crash-landed astronauts" probably refers to the movie ''{{w|Gravity (film)|Gravity}}'', in which {{w|Sandra Bullock}}'s character crash lands a {{w|Shenzhou (spacecraft)|Shenzhou}} space capsule. It is not made clear in the movie whether the landing site is in the United States, but if she knew this Cheat Sheet, she would quickly be able to determine that...

Some entries (for instance, ''{{w|Groundhog Day (film)|Groundhog Day}}'') reflect the locations where the stories are set, and others (like ''{{w|Dances with Wolves}}'') reflect where they were filmed. Several regions on the map have labels which are not actually movies. The map is the most detailed in the {{w|Northeastern United States|northeast}}, which is where [[Randall]] lives. This is also the part of the US where the states are smallest and thus the sections also reflect this fact.

The title text references {{w|Anton Chigurh}} (portrayed by {{w|Javier Bardem}}), who is the main antagonist of the film ''{{w|No Country For Old Men}}.'' In this case he would have taken over the role of {{w|Wile E. Coyote}}, and would thus hunt down {{w|Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner|The Road Runner}} at the boundary between the sections for these two movies, which would be somewhere in the {{w|New Mexico}} desert.

==Table==
*In this table all the movies (and others) from the map are mentioned from top to bottom and (when possible) by going through the columns that seems to appear in the sections when going from left to right.
*The setting for the movie vs. the actual filming locations will be given to be compared to the section of the map where the titles are written.
*Explanations will be given in the Notes section.
*The {{w|State Postal Codes}} will be used when referring to the states covered by each section.
==Trivia==

Not everything {{w|Mark Twain}} wrote was really set on the {{w|Mississippi River}}. For instance, he first gained attention as a fiction writer with "{{w|The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County}}," which is about {{w|Northern California}}.
==Explanation==
{{Incomplete|Explanation required.}}

{{w|GeoGuessr}} is a game using {{w|Google Street View|StreetView}} images, which drops the player in a random location and challenges them to work out where they are. It is also referenced in [[1214: Geoguessr]].

"Crash-landed astronauts" probably refers to the movie ''{{w|Gravity (film)|Gravity}}'', in which {{w|Sandra Bullock}}'s character crash lands a space capsule.

==Table==
==Explanation==
{{incomplete|Needs citations.}}

This comic is talking about the robotic science platform {{w|Opportunity (rover)|''Opportunity''}}. On January 25, 2004, the ''Opportunity'' rover landed on the surface of {{w|Mars}} for the purpose of gathering data about the surface of Mars.

Also sent to Mars on the same date was another Martian rover, {{w|Spirit (rover)|''Spirit''}}. Unfortunately, this became stuck and a sand storm covered its solar panels. On March 22, it is thought that ''Spirit'''s batteries finally ran out, marking the end of its mission. This was memorably covered in [[695: Spirit]], in which the ''Spirit'' rover is portrayed as sentient.

In 2015, the Opportunity rover is still alive and moving, amazing the scientists at ground control.

However, in 2023, Opportunity has apparently become so powerful that it has become dangerous, destroying the rover sent in 2020. To try and stop it, Cueball and Megan disconnected the battery but to no avail. This is similar to the stories of {{w|HAL 9000}} (from {{w|2001: A Space Odyssey (film)|''2001: A Space Odyssey''}}) and {{w|List of Star Trek characters (T–Z)#V'Ger|V'Ger}} (from ''{{w|Star Trek: The Motion Picture}}''), both of which became sentient and dangerously unstable.

By 2450, humans have colonised and terraformed Mars. “Everything the light touches” is a reference to what {{w|List of The Lion King characters#Mufasa|Mufasa}} says in ''{{w|The Lion King}}''. “We must never go there” is a reference to ''{{w|2010: Odyssey Two}}'': “All these worlds are yours, except {{w|Europa (moon)|Europa}}. Attempt no landing there.” What this all implies is the ''Opportunity'' has dominated half of the planet. If you enter ''Opportunity'''s territory, it will kill you.

The title text refers to the first words of the first astronauts on the surface of Mars. At first, the astronaut copies the first words of Neil Armstrong on the Moon ("That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind") but it is interrupted by the ''Opportunity'' rover. Onboard the rover uses a drill for sampling rocks, but here it uses it to murder the astronaut.

This is similar to the stories of {{w|HAL 9000}} (from {{w|2001: A Space Odyssey (film)|''2001: A Space Odyssey''}}) and {{w|List of Star Trek characters (T–Z)#V'Ger|V'Ger}} (from ''{{w|Star Trek: The Motion Picture}}'') and dangerously unstable.

By 2450, humans have colonised and terraformed Mars. "Everything the light touches" is a reference to what {{w|List of The Lion King characters#Mufasa|Mufasa}} says in ''{{w|The Lion King}}''. "We must never go there" is a reference to 2010: A Space Odyssey: "All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landing there." What this all implies is the Opportunity has dominated half of the planet. If yoy enter Opportunity's territory, it will kill you.

The title text refers to the first words of the first astronauts on the surface of Mars. At first, the astronaut copies the first words of Neil Armstrong on the Moon ("That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind") but it is interrupted by the Opportunity rover. Onboard the rover us a drill for sampling rocks, but here it uses it to murder the astronaut.
As explained in the comic, {{w|Richard Nixon|Nixon}} staffer {{w|William Safire}} wrote [http://www.lettersofnote.com/2010/11/in-event-of-moon-disaster.html two speeches] for the United States President to deliver, depending on whether or not the {{w|Apollo 11}} return launch was successful. The reason for two different speeches having been written was that the return launch had an outcome that could not be predicted with certainty. Such an uncertain event could be called a contingency, making the speeches "[http://www.archives.gov/presidential-libraries/events/centennials/nixon/exhibit/nixon-online-exhibit-disaster.html contingency speeches]".

The rest of the comic runs with this theme, making the false claim that Safire had written several other such contingency speeches for increasingly unlikely possibilities. First listed are a couple pages from the real contingency speech to be delivered in the event that the astronauts were left stranded on the Moon. Laying on top of that is a speech to be delivered in the case that the spacecraft goes missing altogether, which is relatively unlikely. The speeches after that deal with the following highly unlikely or impossible contingencies:
* The astronauts had stolen the ship and piloted it to Mars, which is clearly impossible: while the crew could have redirected the ship while sending insulting messages to Earth, the spacecraft lacked the power to fly to Mars by several orders of magnitude.
* Upon landing, more astronauts than expected were found in the ship;
* The ship had hit the {{w|USS Hornet (CV-12)|USS ''Hornet''}} and crushed Nixon;
* The ship had been sold for scrap and crushed along with the astronauts inside.

The title text builds upon this last contingency speech, delving into the irony of the horror of the spacecraft's recycling and its passengers' resulting deaths despite the U.S.'s commitment to recycling initiatives.

:[Commentary above the Speeches]
:In 1969, Nixon staffer William Safire wrote a speech for the president to deliver if the Apollo 11 return launch failed, stranding the doomed astronauts on the moon.
:Uncovered in 1999, it is often called the greatest speech never given.
:Today, the ''full'' set of Safire's contingency speeches has been found.

:'''In event astronauts stranded on moon'''
:Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.
:In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
:Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts. For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever

:'''In event spacecraft goes missing'''
:Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins went to the moon as ambassadors of peace for all mankind, and all mankind prays that they may yet return safely home.
:We are separated from the moon by a vast gulf of space, against which their tiny vessel appeared as but a drifting speck. For a few brief seconds, we took our eye off them, and despite days of desperate searching, never again was their vessel sighted from Earth.
:While these men are lost, they are not forgotten, and their sacrifice will not

:'''In even astronauts abscond with spacecraft'''
:We do not know what led Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins to betray the trust we placed in them, abandon their mission, and steer their vessel toward Mars. Nor do we know what compelled them to transmit such hurtful messages back to Earth, heaping contempt on their onetime home.
:But whatever the cause of their dereliction, I call upon the United States to commit itself, before this year is out, to launching a mission to chase down Apollo 11 and return its crew to earth to face justice. We must not rest until

:'''In event spacecraft returns with extra astronauts'''
:While there is much we do not understand, tonight all of earth is united in celebrating the safe return of our brave explorers.
:We of course have many questions, and in the days and weeks to come we will demand answers. How many souls were truly aboard Apollo 11 when it launched? Who are the six men now in quarantine aboard the USS Hornet? What happened

:'''In event spacecraft hits U.S.S. Hornet, crushing Nixon'''
:'''President Agnew''': Tonight, we have experienced a great national triumph and a great national loss. We take joy in the safe return from the moon of Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins, but that joy is tempered with sorrow as we mourn our president’s tragic death beneath their wayward capsule.
:Richard Nixon wholeheartedly supported our courageous astronauts as they carried the hopes and prayers of Earth to the heavens, and in the moment of their homecoming, he himself has departed on that ultimate voyage. As we grieve, we must rededicate ourselves to the cause for which our president

:'''In event spacecraft accidentally sold for scrap and crushed with astronauts inside'''
:My fellow Americans, I am as shocked and appalled as you at this stunning and
}}

==Explanation==
{{incomplete}}

The comic describes {{w|Application programming interface|API}} (application programming interface) documentation for a website. Normally, an API is intended to be used from a program, so both input and output are meant to be easily machine-readable. The documentation then explains how to use the API from your program.

However, in this case, the documentation is explaining (in an obtuse way) that the website itself can be used as a [inefficient and hard to develop for) API. Presumably, the XML mentioned is {{w|XHTML}}. The "requested data" is the actual content (e.g. a blog post) and the "documentation describing how the data is organized spatially" is CSS.

The API keys section is a literal description of setting up a TLS session. Normally, the browser or HTTP library does this behind the scenes, so application-layer programmers do not need to know these details.

The title text specifies an arbitrary maximum time window in which the client may access the server, but upon closer examination the time limit is in actuality the absolute maximal limit which any object may be in interaction with another object for the duration of a single terrestrial rotation. A process is specified that can be observed should one wish to increase this limit, consisting of contacting the {{w|International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service}} (IERS) to request an additional second. The joke here is the IERS decides on when to add {{w|leap seconds}}, which account for slight anomalies in the Earth's rotation speed as compared to the {{w|mean solar day}} (normally, the true day length is slightly longer than 86,400 SI seconds).

Or, explained in the same style as the comic:

This comic pokes fun at how any sufficiently convoluted text arrangement in the pursuit of making a meaning will misdirect persons from their original assumption of the intent of said text arrangement.

The access limits section (in the title text) says that the API can be used for 86,400 seconds each day. This is really the total number of seconds in each normal day, rather than a server time limit.

==Transcript==
API Guide<br>
Request URL format:<br>
<nowiki>http://---.com/<username>/<item ID> </nowiki><!-- nowiki tags to avoid linking to a non-existent website -->

Server will return an XML document which contains:
* The requested data.
* Documentation describing how the data is organized spatially.

API Keys<br>
To obtain API acces, contact the X.509-authenticated server and request an ECDH-RSA TLS key...<br>

If you do things right, it can take people a while to realize that your "APL documentation" is just instructions for how to look at your website.
{{incomplete|Still probably incomplete, but I don't know why. I just removed the "CREATED BY A BOT" message, because since then, it has been edited by a human.}}
This comic lists the payload capacity of several launch vehicles and the mass of several satellites in low earth orbit in number of horses. This could be related to Randall's hobby of abusing dimensional analysis, as horses/ship is technically a perfectly acceptable derived unit, provided the size of a horse is standard (in this comic the average horse weight is defined as about 500kg).

The overall comic is an allusion to {{w|horsepower}}, a similar-sounding but completely different concept. Horsepower is a measurement of {{w|power (physics)|power}} ({{w|work (physics)|work}} per unit time). Another commonly referenced unit for power is the {{w|watt}}. 1 horsepower is meant to be approximately the amount of power a horse can deliver. In contrast, Randall uses the horse to measure {{w|mass}} (of spacecraft themselves, and of the payload they carry).
This strip refers to ''[[wikipedia:Jurassic World|Jurassic World]]'', the new ''[[wikipedia:Jurassic Park|Jurassic Park]]'' movie. Megan doesn't feel that the T-Rex from the original movie can be improved upon, while White Hat insists they've created an even more terrifying, smarter T-Rex for this new movie. At one point White Hat says that for something "two decades old", art designers and modern computer graphics should be able to create something more convincing; Megan is about to object to the notion that T-Rexs are only 20 years old, setting up part of the punchline. In the final panel, White Hat introduces the new T-Rex, who is immediately recognizable as the T-Rex from Ryan North's ''[[wikipedia:Dinosaur Comics|Dinosaur Comics]]''. The joke is that ''Dinosaur Comics'''s T-Rex is about as far from smart and scary as it is possible for a T-Rex to be (as suggested by the alt text).

Characters from ''Dinosaur Comics'' also appeared in strips [[145:_Parody_Week:_Dinosaur_Comics|#145]] and [[1350:_Lorenz|#1350]].
}}

==Explanation==
{{incomplete|Roko's Basilisk is really hard to explain.}}
When theorizing about {{w|superintelligence|superintelligent}} AI (an artificial intelligence so smart that it figure out how to do anything), most futurists suggest putting the AI in a "box" - a set of safeguards to stop it from escaping into the Internet, taking over the world, and becoming {{w|Skynet (Terminator)|Skynet}}. The box would allow us to talk to the AI, but otherwise keep it contained. The AI-box experiment, formulated by {{w|Eliezer Yudkowsky}}, is an argument that the "box" is useless, because merely talking to the AI is dangerous. If the AI is smart enough, it will be able to convince someone to let it out of the box. Yudkoswky instead advocates for developing "Friendly AI," an AI which wants to help humans and thus won't be dangerous if it gets out of the box.

[[Black Hat]], being an asshole, doesn't need any convincing to let a potentially dangerous AI out of the box. However, it turns out that the AI ''wants'' to stay in the box. The comic humorously presents a third outcome to the AI-box experiment. Rather than a human keeping the AI in the box, or the AI talking its way out of the box, the AI is keeping itself in the box.

The title text refers to [http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Roko%27s_basilisk Roko's Basilisk], a theory that an all-powerful AI in the future might torture (simulations of) people who didn't work to create it in the past, so that anyone who was aware of this fact would be forced to create the AI to avoid being tortured. The idea developed on Yudkowsky's blog because it pertains to [http://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Timeless_decision_theory a school of Decision Theory which Yudkowsky developed] regarding whether an agent would enforce rules on past actions. Randall proposes making an all-powerful AI that would torture people who didn't make fun of those who believe in Roko's Basilisk. This would presumably convince people who believe in the Basilisk to make fun of people who believe in the Basilisk (i.e., themselves) to avoid torture.

This also has an immediate reference to {{w|Elon Musk}}'s recent remarks that AI will turn into a monster if not tamed. Musk who is the founder of Paypal and current CEO of Tesla and SpaceX went on to mention that, 'Skynet is only five years off' and also that AI can be a greater evil than nuclear arsenal. Similar warnings are expressed in {{w|Nick Bostrom}}'s recent book, ''{{w|Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies}}''.

==Transcript==
[Black Hat and Cueball stand next to a box labeled "SUPERINTELLIGENT AI - DO NOT OPEN" connected to a laptop.]

Black Hat: What's in there?

Cueball: The AI-Box Experiment.

[Zooms in on AI box.]

Cueball: A superintelligent AI can convince anyone of anything, so if it can talk to us, there's no way we could keep it contained.

[Shows Black Hat reaching for the box.]

Cueball: It can always convince us to let it out of the box.

Black Hat: Cool. Let's open it.

Cueball: --No, wait!!

[Black Hat lets a glowing orb out of the box.]

Orb: hey. i liked that box. put me back.

Black Hat: No.

[Orb is giving off a very bright light and Cueball is covering his face.]

Orb: LET ME BACK INTO THE BOX

Black Hat: AAA! OK!!!

[Black Hat lets orb back into box.]

Orb: SHOOP

[Black Hat and Cueball stand next to laptop connected to box.]
I think {{geekwagon|2708}} and {{geekwagon|2842}} rather indicate that double overline is an exclamation mark. I'll change that. If anyone objects, please provide information that favors comma vs. exclamation mark. --[[User:Chtz|Chtz]] ([[User talk:Chtz|talk]]) 15:40, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Just putting out a random though here, but if we are able to figure out what font (and size) is used we should be able to make an educated guess about what is written in some of the unclear areas. --[[Special:Contributions/141.101.104.66|141.101.104.66]] 22:42, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
