My experience with rotten tomatoes ratings in particular is that they have no clue and I find their ratings useless. The challenge from Randall in this comic is a case in point: the first movie I though to check, “Another Gay Movie” gets a 40% on the tomatometer yet is one of my favorites. Same thing with all the “Eating Out” movies: good comedies that I enjoy, yet Tomatometer scores of 16%, 44%, and 17% for the first three. (And why is “Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds” so much higher ranked than 1 or 3? It’s not that different...)
I think the criteria that Randal assumes (but doesn’t mention) is that the movie has to be a box office hit that appeals to mainstream audiences.162.158.107.73 03:55, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
:Maybe because Rotten Tomatoes was launched close to the end of the 1990s, so post-2000 movies are the only ones that have been reviewed as they came out? Or perhaps it's to limit the scope of "movies that came out in your adult life", since adult life could go back a long way for some people. Hawthorn (talk) 01:16, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
:I don't know for certain, but I feel incredibly confident that it's the timing of Rotten Tomatoes, that older movies that came out before the site existed won't be thoroughly / properly covered. Like if you look closely you'll see the 40% rating on this movie comes from only 1 vote. I suspect Randall feels that as of 2000, there was enough activity on the site to provide sufficient coverage. NiceGuy1 (talk) 04:40, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

I KNOW that there are many, many movies I can apply to this challenge - I often find myself enjoying unpopular movies. Plus, critics suck, they seem to always forget that this is ENTERTAINMENT. A clever movie that is dull as dirt and makes you fall asleep should NOT receive high praise, it fails at the primary function - but I can't think of them in the moment. About a week ago on Facebook I had a memory, a list of facts about Eurotrip, where the article called it a flop, while I loved it, so probably that one. This comic triggered my first ever visit to Rotten Tomatoes, who lists Eurotrip as I think 46%, but much higher for Audience score, so I THINK it counts? What bumps me is that it seems like "Audience Score" would be popular opinion, making Eurotrip actually a Popular movie, which seems like then it wouldn't apply here. ???? I just wanted to comment on the nature of particles being abstractions from quantum field theory. Look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_field_theory in the section marked "Implications". It contains references to "particle-like" and "field-like" objects. The mathematics demonstrate artifacts that appear to correspond to the particles. However, does that mean that particle is a result of the mathematics or the mathematics represent the particle. If a particle is something that can be observed, how can it be an abstraction? The particle is a real object whose behavior can be described more or less accurately by the mathematics. Now, if you had a virtual world inside a computer where Quantum Field Theory is used to determine the location of particles, then particles would be abstract data arising from Quantum Field Theory. I realize that this sounds confusing, and I am trying to think of how to word this more clearly. | titletext = If you live in the Northern hemisphere, anyway. In the southern hemisphere, due to the coriolis effect, babies are born nine months BEFORE they're conceived.
}}
Explanation
Horoscopes are supposed to predict someones personality, or future, depending on the position of planets and stars at the time of their birth and now, especially based on their (zodiac signs). Today, horoscopes are admitted to be pseudoscience which is why the comic jokes about the fact that it's horoscopes at least may be true (at least for someone born in The United States, aftre a full term pregnancy). "Real" horoscopes are typically so vague that they could be true for anyone regardless of their sign.

Since the 12 category zodiac signs in horoscopes are based on birthday dates, Randall can do some informed guess about the context of someone's Fertilisation (i.e., what was happening nine months before they were born), depending on the sign. For example, Virgo (astrology) are born mostly in September, so they were conceived shortly before Christmas, leading to the guess "You may have been Fertilisation while a Christmas song played". So Randall's "predictions" are possible, if not useful. Contrary to popular horoscopes, here there is an actual reason why for instance the horoscope for Virgo is most likely true for Virgos and so on. See detailed description in the table below.

The title text refers to the Coriolis effect which occurs to a body that is moving on an object that is spinning. Since the Earth is rotating this leads to the fact that something that is moving on Earth feels a force (the Coriolis force) which causes the moving object to be deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. This effect is the reason that Coriolis_effect#Meteorology (most clearly seen for hurricanes) rotates in one direction in the northern hemisphere and in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere. There is also a common Coriolis_effect#Draining_in_bathtubs_and_toilets that water will spin down a plug hole in a different direction in the two hemispheres (see also 843: Misconceptions). The Coriolis force can also be experienced on a much smaller scale, for instance if you try to walk on a spinning carousel.

Randall plays on misconceptions regarding this fictitious force to make a joke involving reversing the flow of time. So whereas babies are born nine months after conception in the northern hemisphere (clockwise) the Coriolis effect is the reason why babies are being born nine months before in the southern hemisphere (counterclockwise).

In reality, the relevant difference between the northern and southern hemispheres is that the meteorological seasons are a half-year out of phase between the two. This renders some of the "predictions" (such as a hot day in August or people trapped by snow in January-February) invalid for the southern hemisphere.
}}

Explanation
Missing some explanations in the table

Horoscopes are supposed to predict someone personality, or future, depending on the position of planets and stars at the time of their birth and now. Today, horoscopes are admitted to be pseudoscience which is why the comic jokes about the fact that these horoscopes at least may be true.

Since the 12 category (zodiac signs) in horoscopes are based on birthday dates, Randall can do some informed guess about the context of someone's Fertilisation (i.e., what was happening nine months before they were born), depending on the sign. For example, Virgo (astrology) are born mostly in September, so they were conceived shortly after Christmas, leading to the guess "You may have been Fertilisation while a Christmas song played". So Randall's "predictions" are possible, if not useful. Contrary to popular horoscopes, here there is an actual reason why for instance the horoscope for Virgo is true only for Virgo and so on.

This effect is the reason that Coriolis_effect#Meteorology (most clearly seen for hurricanes) rotates in one direction in the northern hemisphere and in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere, and is the source of a common misconception that water will spin down a plug hole in a different direction in the two hemispheres.
}}

Explanation
Page is a stub

Horoscopes are supposed to predict someone personality, or future, depending on the position of planets and stars at the time of their birth and now. Today, horoscopes are admitted to be pseudoscience.

However, because the 12 category (zodiac signs) in horoscopes are based on birthday dates, Randall can do some informed guess about the context of someone's conception (i.e., what was happening nine months before they were born), depending on the sign. For example, Virgos are born mostly in September, so they were conceived shortly after Christmas, leading to the guess "You may have been conceived while a Christmas song played". So Randall's "predictions" are possible, if not useful. Contrary to popular horoscope, there is an actual reason horoscope for Virgo is true only for Virgo and so on.

But it can also be experiences on much smaller scales where Humans can feel the force. for instance if you try to walk on a spinning carousel. Since the human body can't adjust for such subtle changes, it often gives the illusion of motion and could cause motion sickness. Randall uses this confusing fictitious force to tell about a very funny (but completely wrong) analogy involving reversing the flow of time. So where babies are born nine months after conception in the northern hemisphere (clockwise) the Coriolis effect is the reason why babies are being born nine months before in the southern hemisphere (counterclockwise).
| titletext = If you've never had sex, this is what it feels like. Complete with the brief feeling of satisfaction, followed by ennui, followed by getting bored and trying to make it happen again.
}}

Explanation
This comic shows the popular video game Tetris, in which you use different shaped pieces to fill in lines to score points. The more lines you fill at a time it results in more points. Normally all pieces are made up of four small squares. This has also been the case for all the pieces at the bottom of the game, however, some parts of some blocks have been erased when a line has been deleted because it was full.

Heaven, in Tetris, is when you get the perfect piece that fills out all the empty space you have on the board. The next piece here is really odd, but it fits exactly the 18 empty spaces to make it possible to remove 6 lines in a row - compared to the four that is normally possible using the long brown piece of length 4. On top of the heavenly feeling of getting a piece that fits - the top score will also be smashed, as the player was at the moment only one point from reaching it!

The next piece, shown to the right, which will come after the special one, is much longer than the normally possible straight brown piece - a normal one can be seen at the bottom right of the game. This next piece seems to be six long as it has he same height as the strange piece - it also seems to be thinner than normal. Such a piece is of course easy to place - but it could also be a part of the joke in the title text.

An alternative view is that the next piece is actually the size of one full line (on a slightly smaller scale), so by rotating 90 degrees, the player can immediately complete another line.

The title text compares this experience with sex, complete with an orgasm and the feelings you get right after sex. After "the brief feeling of satisfaction" from the orgasm you are bored, ennui means a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest, but at the end you want more. The next piece in the game could resemble a cigarette. In the past people always had a smoke after sex.

A fan have made a modified version of the classic Tetris game, where at a certain frequency, a 'heaven' perfectly fitting block comes along. The game can be found on. http://www.gudmagazine.com/games/heaven/.

Also see comic 724: Hell, which presents an opposing situation in which the game is impossible to play.

Choosing to post a comic called Heaven as number 888_(number)#Symbology_and_numerology is not a coincidence - as in Christian numerology, the number 888 represents Jesus and in Chinese numerology it represents triple fortune.
: Agree. To me, it looks like it's definitely light blue (maybe "cornflower"?) with pale olive stripes. "Gold" would really be a stretch. It looks like that in all lighting conditions and in both backgrounds of the strip. Did I pass some kind of color-blindness test? Or fail? : This has nothing to do with color-blindness, but probably with certain arbitrary constants related to white-balance adjustment that differ brain-to-brain. Many people I know insist that even though the picture looks blue, it's a dress illuminated by a blue light, and based on this assumption their brain may essentially redden the whole picture to adjust for this light. The actual picture was taken in white light, not blue light. 173.245.55.28 07:46, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
Apparently for some people the left-hand-side's general blueishness is adjusted against by the visual system enough to make the dress look white and gold instead of blue and brown. :Now changed. (Saw it myself before I saw your comment, and just lept straight in there. Hopefully I changed the right left so that it's right and not left the wrong left whilst producing the wrong right. Alright?)
Are they really the same colour? 'Cause to me on the blue side it looks blue and black- while on the white side it looks white and gold. Is this normal? FlyingPiggy
The figure on the right definitely has a beard. 108.162.249.182 09:38, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
I checked with ColorZilla and the RGB values are identical. From my perspective, in the one on the left the dress appears pale blue with darker brown/gold stripes, and the one on the right appears a darker blue with lighter brown/gold stripes. This is just a polychromatic version of that checker shadow illusion, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checker_shadow_illusion 108.162.231.38 10:12, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
:That's what I thought too. But it looks the same (doesn't it?) and is the same (that, thankfully is non-subjective and verifiable with as little as MSPaint), so I'm at loss as to why this deserves a comic. : This is a common optical illusion (at least I've seen this many times) - most peoples eyes perform a white balance adjustment automatically which affects the perceived colours. If your eyes don't do this then you will do well in the paint colour matching business. http://www.moillusions.com/hue-optical-illusion/ I apologise for the jarring colours in the link.

The comic is a reference to the debate around the coloration of this dress. The band in the middle of the image shows some of the material of the dress. To some people, including me, the dress is obviously, unquestionably black and blue. But to others, including my wife, it's obviously, unquestionably, black and gold.
:And to others it's apparently a number of other combinations - I've seen claims of white/gold and blue/orange. However, surprisingly few people seem to have seen this link to the manufacturer's page for what appears to be the same dress; available in 4 colour combinations which according to the manufacturers' descriptions are ivory/black, scarlet/black, pink/black and royal-blue/black, with pictures available of all versions. As such I'm happy to accept the pictures doing the rounds are probably the blue/black variant (although most of the over-exposed versions I've seen appear light-blue/goldish-brown to me)

While reading that I got curious: How is it possible to gain a B.A. in mathematics? I couldn't find any information about the U.S. bachelor system, but in Germany a bachelor's degree in any STEM field is considered a B.Sc. Interestingly, a few years after this comic was made, George Clinton did record the track "Mathematics Of Love" (http://www.metrolyrics.com/mathematics-of-love-lyrics-george-clinton.html).
