Juicers are typically used to crush fruits and/or vegetables, thereby extracting the liquid juice and eliminating the task of chewing the solids. However, in this case, instead of actual fruits or vegetables, someone is making juice from {{w|Fruit_Gushers|fruit gushers}}, a chewy fruit-flavored candy, thereby extracting a nearly nutritionless artificial "juice" out of a candy casing which was formulated specifically for human consumption.

The title text asserts that the rind is where all the {{w|Vitamin|vitamins}} in the fruit reside. This is a common belief of actual fruits, although it is an untrue {{w|Urban legend|urban legend}} for many fruits; even fruits like apples do not contain most of the {{w|fiber}} and many {{w|Antioxidant|antioxidants}} in the skin itself, but rather directly below; although when you peel an apple you remove more than just the skin, losing also that area with high fiber and antioxidant content anyway. There is a simple rule: If your thumbnail can reach the flesh of a fruit don't remove the skin. It is absolutely absurd as in this case, though, as the "rind" of a Fruit Gusher consists mainly of sugar. This text mocks the usual sentiment that the less desirable part of a food is the part that is "better" for you.

The comic is thus also a parody of the notion that buying a juicer (or other things like exercise equipment) will automatically make people healthier. Here it is shown that what you do with the juicer is the relevant factor (for example, if one juiced solely apples every day, he or she would not get nearly the same nutritional benefits as someone who juiced other fruits and vegetables with more and varied nutrients).

An alternative reading that expands on that theme is that the comic shows a juicer with three full bottles of real juice, indicating that the owner of the juice machine is making regular juice with the intention of drinking it, but not consuming juice at the rate it is produced. The comic also shows a Fruit Gusher snack, indicating the unhealthy option that the juicer owner just can't stop eating. But the color of the juices makes the first explanation more likely.

I.e., if you know enough to be dangerous about English spelling you could think that both words are pronounced /ˈdʒuʃərz/, but that's non-sense. Never the less...
*The plain-English word "gush" (meaning to flow rapidly) is pronounced with a hard 'g' and a 'u' as in 'flush' or 'gut.'
*The American television commercials for this product make it absolutely clear that "Gushers" is also pronounced with a hard 'g' and the 'u' as above.
*A 'g' can signify a soft-g sound (/dʒ/ as in 'gin'). However, natives know that the soft-g sound never appears in the combination "gu".

On the 14th of August, the {{w|International Astronomical Union}} [http://www.iau.org/science/news/179/ issued a document] about public naming of astronomical objects. It stated, "IAU fully supports the involvement of the general public, whether directly or through an independent organised vote, in the naming of planetary satellites, newly discovered planets, and their host stars.". It also contained, amongst other things, guidelines that suggested names should meet. These include stipulations such as "16 characters or less", "preferably one word", being "pronounceable (in as many languages as possible)", "not too similar to an existing name of an astronomical object", avoiding commercial names, and being "respectful of intellectual property". If we go down the list, we can see that many of Randall's suggestions do indeed violate the guidelines. Which is probably part of the joke.

And yes, the document also states that suggestions may be sent to the email mentioned in the title text.

If the probability of a shark attack at the North beach is one per million, then the probability of shark attack at the South beach is still not more than 1.2 per million. The difference between these values is not enough to normally justify choosing one beach over the other, even though a "20% greater" chance sounds significant when stated out of this larger context.

[[Cueball]] parodies the concern by noting that going to a beach three times instead of two their chances of attack by dogs with handguns in their mouths (a ludicrous and unrealistic scenario) increases by 50%. This method of relating the probabilites of two events is known as {{w|Bayes' theorem|Bayes' Theorem}}.

If you put a seashell up to your ear, you can hear {{w|Seashell resonance|a sound similar to the ocean}} apparently inside the shell. But the idea that this sound is actually the sound of the sea is just a popular myth: hold only your hands close to your ears and you will hear the same sound. The comic, through an application of Bayes' Theorem points out that most of the time when you pick up a seashell, you are in fact at the beach next to the real ocean, so hearing the ocean at that location is not all that impressive, but it's just real.

The title text points out that most instances where the author has picked up a seashell have been at the beach, and nearly all of the times where he has picked up a seashell and put it to his ear have been there.

This comic was released late and at the first version the formula was incorrect. But it's corrected now.

The comic appears to be an illustration of passing time. From the spectator's point of view, each image is meaningless by itself ; the only possible perception of time is to "''wait for it''" and see how things evolve. Thus, time is in the spectator's perception, not in each individual frame.

{{w|Chess}} is a very old board game in which two players take turns moving one of their 16 pieces to try and capture the other player's king (one of the pieces). When one player is in a position to capture his or her opponent's king on their next move, and the opponent has no legal move available to avoid such capture, the opponent is said to be in "checkmate". This is considered to be the end of the game with a win for the first player; though chess etiquite suggests that a player facing inevitable checkmate ought to forfiet at that point.

The game, with origins around the 6th century, and with the modern rules being essentially set in the late 15th century, has a significant amount of history. The rules and traditions are well established. The knight is a piece that can only move in an L-shaped pattern (two squares in one direction, and one square perpendicular), but compensates by being able to jump over other pieces.

The comic highlights two mistakes players often make in chess: complete fixation on the king at the cost of their other pieces, and failure to take advantage of the knights movement patterns. At the same time this is a jab at the oversimplification people sometimes show when confronted with a topic they are not familar with. Previously this was depicted in {{explain|675}} and {{explain|793}}. See also the {{w|Dunning–Kruger effect}}. The units in chess are widely agreed to be well-balanced, and Cueball's criticism of the knight shows an obvious lack of knowledge of the knight's potential.

[[Cueball]]'s friend proceeds to demonstrate Cueball's lack of knowledge by beating him in four moves, which typically would only occur when a very experienced player plays a novice. The checkmate depicted is likely the {{w|Scholar's Mate}} and is the second shortest checkmate in chess. However, it could be a variation of the {{w|Fool's Mate}} with White winning instead of Black.

Cueball, instead of admitting he underestimated the game, instead believes the failure to be on the part of the game itself. Given that Cueball has no experience as a chess player, it is likely that many of the changes are illogical or rediculous. In the face of hundreds of years of history, it is not surprising that the chess community is ignoring them.
