==Explanation==
[[Cueball]] is trying to decide if he wants to stay with [[Ponytail]] who he is currently dating or leave her and have a relationship with [[Megan]]. The comic suggests that no matter which one he chooses he will never truly achieve happiness because of his longing for the option he chose not to take. In a sense this is a {{w|no-win situation}}. No matter what he does of interesting stuff (sex or otherwise) with Ponytail he will be thinking forever of Megan, and vice versa. This even goes on after he dies, where he lies next to one of them and thinks he would rather have been buried next to the other girl. This may have been averted, if [[Cueball]] had chosen polygamy and had relations with both girls, although then he might have cause to wonder what ''both'' the single-relationships coupd have been like.

The title text is referring to a concept in computer science. All {{w|Comparison sort|comparison based sorting algorithms}} are incapable of sorting an arbitrary set of n values faster than an order of n*log(n). On the other hand, non-comparison sorting algorithms (e.g. {{w|bucket sort}}) with external knowledge of the distribution of the values can sort them with order n. If [[Cueball]] was capable of establishing an external scale he could use a non-comparison sort, but as he does not know what the best thing for him is he is stuck with comparisons and thus he can't achieve better performance.

This comic is possibly a sequel to [[310: Commitment]].

Most stars only produce Bell rotary phones, perhaps producing touch tone or even cordless phones briefly as they move off the main sequence. Massive stars can produce up to Nokia phones, but that's the final stage that stars can produce in their normal lifespan. All smartphones are produced in supernova. The comic interprets the UI labels next to the stars as actual objects in space, which is absurd{{Citation needed}} because, among other reasons, they could be observed from multiple distances. If these labels were to become astrophysical objects in reality, it would quickly result in major changes to the universe. As each of these labels would need to be clearly visible from an observatory, they would require monstrous size — maybe even big enough to collapse into black holes when applied to particularly distant stars. They would also create a sudden lack of need for themselves, as the stars would be gravitationally attracted to their respective labels and promptly destroyed.

Labels like this are often generated by outdated or specialized software and tend to use bad fonts and small font sizes. The software developer may have expected all images to be exported at the standard resolution at the time of development and set the font size to pixel size in the code. The label on the billboard appears to be pointing to a star in the spiral galaxy M106 (also known as "{{w|Messier 106}}" and "NGC 4258"), located between 22 and 25 million light-years away from earth.

The title text suggests that the "crosshairs" around red giant stars, indicating those starting to burn helium, are standardized objects in space. One of such crosshairs can be seen in the comic, around the previously mentioned marked star. These crosshairs, like the labels in the comic, are just graphical UI marks. Its reference to red giant stars starting to burn helium is because of how, in real life, all red giant stars at that stage have the same absolute brightness. {{w|Standard candles|This allows their distance to be determined}} because the observed luminosity is a simple inverse-distance-squared falloff from a known original value. The page technically uses the incorrect characters for (at least) E, M, N, O, R, S, and T based on the title text shown on xkcd.com. The original title text uses two separate characters (ex. A + 0301 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT for E), whereas the table uses the combined character (ex. 00C1 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A WITH ACUTE for E). Alternatively, my browser is just doing something weird.
