==Explanation==
This comic is a reference to the {{w|Deepwater Horizon}} oil spill that happened in the {{w|Gulf of Mexico}}. {{w|Top kill}} is a reference to a procedure used as a means of regaining control over an oil well that is experiencing an uncontrolled eruption of crude oil. {{w|Michael Bay}} is an American film director known for his over the top special effects and plots.

This comic is a commentary on the state of broadcast journalism and how they are always looking for speculation and voyeurism rather than facts. That they ask if Mr. Bay's proposed firestorm will have any effect on the then-upcoming congressional elections just serves to underline how little the journalists actually care about the damage that has actually been caused.

James Carville is a political commentator who was born and lives in Louisiana, and thus relates to media, politics, and Louisiana at once.

The title text has a reference to Jeff Masters, who is director of meteorology at Weather Underground and Bruce Schneier, who is a world-renowned security expert and has a blog and several books. Vitamin D is a vitamin that the human body can synthesize with the aid of direct sunlight; the joke, "go outside", is Randall accusing us of all being shut-ins.

In this interactive {{w|April Fools' Day}} comic [[Cueball]], presumably representing [[Randall]], admits to the readers he built a flimsy {{w|Cloud computing|cloud}} services company using spare computers and parts. Included in the cloud hardware are (from left to right) a {{w|Macintosh Classic}}, several old laptops, an {{w|Alienware}} tower, a {{w|Nintendo}} {{w|VirtualBoy}}, some sort of radio transmitter, and an {{w|Atari, Inc.|Atari}} {{w|Pong#Home_version|Pong Console}}.

He named the company after xkcd, by just inserting ''lou'' between the last two letters XKClouD, although here it should be pronounced XK-cloud.

After providing his services to various (very big) companies ({{w|Facebook}}, {{w|Twitter}} and {{w|Tumblr}}), that are very concerned with securing the users data, his setup failed (some portions may even have caught fire? He is not sure). This has caused him to lose the data he was required to preserve as part of his service. Below the "survey", the reader is presented with a listing similar to a Facebook news feed, listing three "posts" of the line-drawings apparently tagged with the captions as paired up by the survey results. After completing the survey, the page refreshes with four new "posts", the top one being the one you just helped create. Each box has a button in the top-right corner that leads to a permalink for that post. On this page the red button asking for help is at the top. This is the same four post as those you had on the previous page, including your own at the top.

It is possible to go back to the front page at any time by clicking the picture of Cueball behind his desk. He is always present to the left on all pages after the front page. It was not immediately clear if the reader-created drawings or captions are, in fact, being cycled into the surveys and feeds, or if the displayed items were all created by Randall and the reader-created content is simply discarded. In either case we are given the reason for the data loss. And there are many different reasons (all by account of Randall), a list (with some explanations) can be found [[1506:_xkcloud/Transcript#Reason_for_data_loss|here]].

This is thus both an interactive and a dynamic comic with the first picture shown on top of this page. By inviting the xkcd readers to add content that will be displayed in the comic later, the result of all the interactions leads to the generation of {{w|Crowdsourcing|crowd-sourced content}}.

Below the "survey", the reader is presented with a listing similar to a Facebook news feed, listing three "posts" of the line-drawings apparently tagged with the captions as paired up by the survey results. The posts are made by apparently fictional randomly-named readers (see examples of names [[1506:_xkcloud/Transcript#User_names|here]]). These posts are accompanied by a button similar to Facebook's "Like" button which is [[1506:_xkcloud/Transcript#Like_buttons|labeled with words]] that are {{w|synonyms}} of "want".

After completing the survey, the page refreshes with four new "posts", the top one being the one you just helped create. On this page the red button asking for help is at the top. The only difference if you click this (rather than when you start at the front page) is that there now are four posts below the one you need to fix. This is the same four post as those you had on the previous page, including your own at the top.

It is possible to go back to the front page at any time by clicking the picture of Cueball behind his desk. He is always present to the left on all pages after the front page. But if you go back to the front page like this, then when you again click on the "original" red button it will always take you back to the same page you came from (with the same post and the same post to fix.) You can thus only get to a new survey page by finishing the current task.

It was not immediately clear if the reader-created drawings or captions are, in fact, being cycled into the surveys and feeds, or if the displayed items were all created by Randall and the reader-created content is simply discarded. It seems likely though, with the huge amount of different comments and drawings. And especially the drawings looks like they are created in the simple paint app. (i.e. not by Randall). But since there are now so many inputs, it is very unlikely you will by chance see your own drawing again. Maybe it will even be kept away from a computer through its IP address.

This comic resembles last years Aprils Fool's comic [[1350: Lorenz]] where user input also generated a very complex comic.

==Explanation==
This comic uses the same strategy as comic [[715: Numbers]], in which [[Randall]] uses Google to search for phrases and then charts the results. This one is charted as a timeline, whereas 715 was charted as line graphs.
It is a list of things predicted or announced by anyone at any time (the ones you see on Google search using "by the year..." or similar statements).

"2101 - War Was Beginning" is a reference to the opening narration of video game ''Zero Wing''; the same narration is famous for the internet meme "{{w|All your base are belong to us}}". As there are not any other out and out references in the comic, and the rest are actually results that you can find using Randall's methods (though "War Was Beginning" most likely came up when he googled 2101 as well).

Certain events in this comic, e.g. "Social Security stops running surplus", are repeated multiple times. Also, certain bizarre events, like "Apocalypse occurs", or "Flying cars reach market", happen before rather plausible things, like "HTML 5 Finished". Certain events, like "Japan is a robot-only country" or "Gillette introduces 14-blade razor" may be related to the recurring theme [[605: Extrapolating]].

The title text is born of a recurring "white people panic" situation; scaremongers will predict white minority in the very near future in order to get the panicked racist people to pay attention to them (without actually using valid or accepted scientific measurements to back up these claims- panicked racist people don't exactly fact-check very much), while level-headed sociologists will usually come up with more distant, if not nonexistent, dates from their extrapolations.

This comic has similar features to [[1413: Suddenly Popular]], [[1093: Forget]], and [[891: Movie Ages]].

The only predictions for this period that came true are that the world population has surpassed 7 billion and that US combat troops have withdrawn from Afghanistan. Canada formally withdrew from the Kyoto protocol in December 2011, and its emissions in 2012 were 18% ''above'' 1990 levels (though its population had grown 26% and its GDP had grown 67% in that period). Sadly, homelessness is still a problem in Massachusetts. The prediction about GNU/Linux operating systems remains false; although Android (which is built on the Linux kernel) is currently the most dominant OS, it is not completely GNU/Linux, which remains an extreme minority on consumer devices. And so far as we're aware, the apocalypse has yet to occur.

Out of curiosity (I'm new to the standards of explainxkcd), are out of date pages considered incomplete? Or is it up to editors to chose when to update a pages explination. I would assume the former, except that would make maintaining the pages significantly more difficult. Also, referencing the Linux takes over. Since Android is now a part of the libux kernel,should thia be changed? It would definently put linux over the 50% mark. I would correct the entry in 2014 that says that the Taliban are the organisation responsible for the September 11th attacks. The more accurate explanation would be that The US believed Al Qaeda (the real organisation responsible) were hiding out in Afghanistan and that defeating the Taliban, and bringing stability to the country was an important stepping stone towards finding Osama Bin Laden. As of 2014 I have noticed that a lot of US sites are moving from html to closed sources such as Adobe so the quote: "The prediction about GNU/Linux Operating Systems is ambiguous" is now fighting through government agencies. Users of Linux trying to access the volcano archive (once supplied by listserv using linux) now have to get access via Windows machines. This has to be the saddest computing news in a long time. Marie Curie tells Ponytail that she shouldn't only look up to only her as a famous woman scientist, and gives examples of other great women scientists, {{w|Lise Meitner}}, one of the major contributors in the discovery of nuclear fission, and {{w|Emmy Noether}}. Zombie Marie Curie tells Ponytail that she shouldn't look up to somebody to be that person, but to strive for greatness instead, as there are other people like her striving to reach their goal as well.

On March 22, 2010, it was thought that ''Spirit'''s batteries finally ran out, marking the end of its mission. This was memorably covered in [[695: Spirit]], in which the ''Spirit'' rover is portrayed as sentient.

In 2015, the Opportunity rover is still alive and moving, amazing the scientists at ground control.

However, in 2023, Opportunity has apparently become so powerful that it has become dangerous, presumably cannibalizing or destroying the {{w|Mars 2020|rover sent in 2020}}. Cueball and Megan note it even continues to operate without its original battery, suggesting it has developed a new power source. This evolution is similar to the stories of {{w|HAL 9000}} (from {{w|2001: A Space Odyssey (film)|''2001: A Space Odyssey''}}) and {{w|List of Star Trek characters (T–Z)#V'Ger|V'Ger}} (from ''{{w|Star Trek: The Motion Picture}}''), both of which became sentient and dangerous.

By 2450, humans have colonised and terraformed Mars. “Everything the light touches” is a reference to what {{w|List of The Lion King characters#Mufasa|Mufasa}} says in ''{{w|The Lion King}}''. (Mufasa's son Simba then asks "What about that shadowy place?" and Mufasa tells him “That is beyond our borders. You must never go there”.) What this all implies is the ''Opportunity'' has dominated half of the planet.

The title text refers to the first words of the first astronauts on the surface of Mars. At first, the astronaut copies the first words of Neil Armstrong on the Moon ("That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind") but it is interrupted by the ''Opportunity'' rover. Onboard the rover uses a drill for sampling rocks, but here it uses it to attack the astronaut.

However White hat states that all he did was go on Google News 5 times, not reading anything each time. So Cueball defends himself by saying that the time he wastes doing stupid things like that makes it more important not to waste the rest of his time typing.

It is so sad. He was ill with {{w|Early-onset Alzheimer's disease|early onset Alzheimer's}} the last eight years, and he still continued to write about a new book each year, and also four in the {{w|The Long Earth}} series together with {{w|Stephen Baxter}}. I have read almost all his books, only waiting for the latest books to come out in paper back. His Discworld series is monumental, and almost all of the 40 books are worth reading, and most of the times the series just got better and better from book to book. Might just begin reading them all again, once I have gotten hold of and read the last published book Raising Steam. (One last(?) book will be out in the fall, as will the last of the Long Earth series. But here another author are there to finish any loose ends). The thing about Terry Pratchett's books, especially his Discworld series, is that you don't know how much you've read until you look at the series as a whole. I mean, I've *only* read all the Rincewind books, the City Watch books, most of the Weatherwax witch books, a couple of the one-shots, the Moist von Lipwig books, the Death books, etc. You don't realize how far you've come until you stop and turn around to look at where you've been.
