According to my geologist father, 'gneiss' is pronounced as &amp;quot;nice&amp;quot; and 'butte' as &amp;quot;beaut.&amp;quot; He also says that buttes are almost never gneiss: gneiss is a metamorphic rock, and buttes are almost always formed from sedimentary rocks.
