==Explanation==
This comic was published the day after the {{w|United States presidential election, 2008|2008 presidential election}} in the US. [[Cueball]] has been closely following the quantitative aspect of the election for over a year and a half, and he seems to be relieved that it's over. Now that the election has passed, he does not have to follow the many different opinion polls, number-crunching analyses, and news clips about people like {{w|Joe the Plumber}} that he has kept close track of during the election season. As soon as he says this, however, he starts to search for information on the {{w|United States presidential election, 2012|2012 election}}, suggesting that his political obsession has not at all passed.

A list of the elements Cueball had been thinking about:
* {{w|Opinion poll|Opinion polls}}: These are simply surveys of voters' opinions on various issues and who they plan to vote for. They tend to be the primary source for predicting the outcome of elections as they can be created well in advance.
* {{w|Exit poll|Exit polls}}: These are surveys conducted with people who have just voted. They are useful as they provide data at the very last minute, so that no other unforeseen circumstances can affect people's decisions (and undecided is no longer an option). However they are not available until the last minute, and can be more biased than opinion polls.
* {{w|Margin of error|Margins of error}}: As censuses are expensive and ultimately pointless, given that the election is effectively a big census, with "did not vote" as an option, {{w|pundits}} (or "talking-heads") use surveys, which involves just interviewing a hopefully representative random sample of voters. This, however, means that the surveys results are not likely to be quite the same as an equivalent census. A margin of error reflects how much variation could likely be expected. Due to the fact that a sample was used, they do not cover issues such as a sample being unrepresentative.
* {{w|Attack ad|Attack ads}}: Attack ads are a form of political campaigning where rather than emphasizing their own qualifications and attributes, a candidate or a group affiliated with the candidate tries to convince voters that their opponents are unsuitable for the office.
* {{w|Game Change|Game-changers}}: Game-changers are events that pundits claim will lead to significant changes in polls. During an election season, at least one election event a month for each candidate is promoted as a "game-changer" by the media. In actuality, it usually has no effect on the outcome, as most voters are already decided in US presidential elections.
* {{w|Opinion_poll#Tracking_polls|Tracking polls}}: A tracking poll is a poll repeated at intervals and averaged. For example, a monthly tracking poll uses the data from the past month and discards older data.
* {{w|Swing State|Swing states}}: In the United States, several states have significant support for one party, and hence due to the fact that the electoral college gives all of a state's vote to a single candidate, small changes in votes do not change the party that has the majority of the vote, and hence does not change who receives that state's electoral college votes. Other states that have near equal support for each candidate are referred to as swing states, and they are particularly interesting for pundits, as relatively small changes in votes can have significant effects on the end result.
* {{w|Swing Vote|Swing votes}}: Swing votes are similar to swing states, expect that they refer to groups of people. If there is a significant social group, a large segment of which could possibly vote for either side, they are of particular interest for pundits.
* {{w|Bradley effect}}: The Bradley effect is a theory that in elections containing a minority candidate, polls will often tend to overstate their level of support. It is theorized that this is due to people not wanting to appear racist whilst being surveyed, so some people who support a non-minority candidate may either claim to be undecided or plan to vote for the minority candidate. However, as voting is private, at that point they may reveal their true preference. The effect is named after Los Angeles Mayor {{w|Tom Bradley (American politician)|Tom Bradley}}, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor's race despite having appeared to have a significant lead in the opinion polls. This effect was particularly interesting for pundits in the 2008 US Presidential Election because of the running of {{w|Barack Obama}}, the first African-American presidential candidate. As there was no precedent for this at this level, some pundits were concerned about how much of his lead in the polls might be due to this effect.
* <name> the <occupation>: A significant event in the 2008 US Presidential Election was a question proposed to the then Democratic nominee Barack Obama by {{w|Joe the Plumber}}. This promoted a variety of hitbacks and counter-hits. Cueball is referring to the tendency of the media at the time to refer to many critics of the two candidates using the {{w|snowclone}} "<name> the <occupation>," where <name> is replaced by the person's first name and <occupation> by their occupation (e.g. "Brad the Masturbator").

The title text is about statistician [[Nate Silver]], who became something of a geek celebrity for his analysis during the campaign. He correctly predicted the outcomes of 49 of the 50 states in the 2008 election on his blog. It jokes that having him predict the outcomes of life decisions would make choosing the best thing to do very easy. So if Cueball ask Nate - "Should I sleep with her?", then Nate could give him a forecast like this: "Well, I'm showing a 35% chance it will end badly." Later, in 2016, Nate Silver's website, FiveThirtyEight, launched [http://fivethirtyeight.com/tag/survey-says/ an advice column] thus making the title text partially come true.

You seem to be taking to heart the punctuation-before-the-Citation-needed standard (which is good, only sometimes it's even more complicated{{Citation needed}}),{{Citation needed}} but I see you recased an example of {{template|citation needed}} to {{template|Citation Needed}}, earlier. Now, it doesn't really matter because there are templates for "citation needed" and "Citation Needed". And also "cn" plus "fact" for the really lazy editors. ;) Anyway, all of these (maybe more, I'd have to check) redirect to the ''main'' "Citation needed" one. (Reflected in {{template|Actual citation needed}}, where "actual citation needed" ''plus'' "acn" redirect there, although {{template|Actual Citation Needed}} - "for completeness" - is actually a 'copy' template in its own right.) I wouldn't bother ''only'' changing various CN variations to "Citation needed"s (there ''is'' also a {{template|Citation neededs}}, but that's a '''s'''truckthrough version of "Citation needed" rather than an ungrammatical "Citation''s'' needed"!), but if you're already editing anything else, it would not at all hurt to get everything to capital-C small-n version. :You have not read the above (properly, at least). The {{template|Citation needed}} is the 'proper' one (for xkcd version of 'proper'), whilst {{template|cn}} is a lazy version that redirects. There's no reason at all to change "Citation needed" to "cn". (Not much reason to change the other way, either, but could be justified if one is editing something else..)

You're trying to be helpful, but... Anyone who ''really'' wants them will probably ask (or wait until they have page-creation rights themself). Looking at all the ones you've made for people, how many have even then been used (by the user concerned)? I suggest you don't need to create them, not even to un-redlink someone's [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?limit=50&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=Cleonis&namespace=&tagfilter=&start=&end= comic discussion] .sig links. It's normally not a big concern, and there's enough people who can help out if someone actually asks for it when you're not paying attention.
 As for the rest of us: ironically, I slightly wanted to drop a note to a long-term user the other day. (Comparatively, i.e. that they've been around for a bit longer than yourself.) They didn't have a User Talk page, so I resorted to a different way of commenting. They can create their own pages, if they want (and, if I was a username myself, I definitely could have by now). Yet I definitely wouldn't consider it valid to give the whole historic userbase any such 'missing' user-spaces.
 I'm no authority on this matter, or even a 'real user' in any properly identifiable way, but please do consider my advice that comes from long but informal experience of this kind of matter. You're not the first eager new contributor to try to help out like this. And you're not the first to have made the odd error (giving a spam-only account a Welcoming page ...which thankfully never got used to further the spamming, the account seemingly abandoned by that point ''anyway''), but of course this was probably before you even started lurking here (certainly before your current username, perhaps even prior to any IP-only-editing you might have done before that). Heck, some 'helpful' people even created the occasional User and/or User Talk spaces for IPs (don't do that, either, it's at best neutrally useless - even from my own IP-wise perspective).

If you are already indenting, then a simple newline and : (or multiple ::s, the same numbed as you were on) handles the textflow properly and ''renders'' it as a linefeed, rather than 'merely' a simple whitespace that continues. I'm doing that here.

Whether a line-started "|" or a successive midline "||" (trust me, when you're used to wikitabls markup, you'll know what I'm saying!), the ''very first'' newline in the wikisource is understood as a renderable newline (because it's not the "|"-at-start-of-line of the next column's cell, or the "|-" tween-line, otherwise expected), but you need to invoke any second, third, etc linebreaks with one or other of the br-tag/double-newline/etc methods. Otherwise it'll just be treated as whitespace and 'unwrap' into a continuous second-para. (As always, if in doubt use the Preview button, check it appears like you think it ought to.)

And as for archiving, this is a place where this wiki differs from enwiki. We don't have an active archiving culture, with archiving bots. Nor do we need it, because our volumes are so low. The history is not so difficult to pull out. But it matters not — I am free to clear out and blank my own talk page on the English wikipedia, and certainly here.

Moving on to your example from [[:User talk:Netherin5]], it is a different situation, and it is in tension with the clear WP:TPG guidelines quoted above. I'd go so far as to say the [[:User:Dgbrt]] was wrong in their absolute statement "must never be blanked," but what was really going on was that Netherin5 had vandalism on their user page, Dgbrt left them a note on their talk page suggesting they blank it, and Netherin5 blanked the talk page not the user page, and Dgbrt advised Netherin5 that's not what Dgbrt meant. In context, I think Dgbrt's statement was fine, but it wasn't actually correct or proper. Needless to say, this matters not. Even if you and Dgbrt both disagree with me, and even if you were somehow right according to some arbitration process, you still don't get to go and make the changes to my talk page yourself. You get to ask, and if you don't like how I respond, you can raise it up to an administrator or something. But you aren't right. Users are entitled to clear their talk pages.

As for your late-added addition: no. I am not going to ask permission from some IP author (who cannot reasonably reached!) to remove their text from my talk page. Although they explicitly granted it in their message anyhow (unnecessarily!). Nor would I ask the named user who accidently posted on my own page in error. Not necessary to do either of those things. :Once it starts involving more people, then it gets tricky, but generally I'd consider the User Talk 'owner' as having the final word over their own whole User Talk page (new editing rights to anyone, editing rights (within reason, typos/honest errors/etc) only to past contributions by such a contributor (i.e. no correcting others' mistakes) and major edits like reorganising (e.g. top-posting to bottom-/followon-posting, indenting, adjusting headers) or indeed discarding what is past its sell-by-date for whatever reason is justifiable (for malicious contributions, immediate squashing, including back-tracking any malicious and unfounded re-editing). (And, obviously IP User-Talks cannot really be 'claimed' or 'governed', so is potentially the worst of all worlds).
:The simple (non-Talk) User page-spaces I would say have ''very'' few reasons to be edited by anyone other than the 'owner' (primarily, as a fall-back if there is a User page but no User Talk page to make a directed comment upon!) and the owner gets to decide everything (within moderatable/administrable limitations, naturally).
:The (regular article) Talk pages have no owner to moderate them, so there's a few more rights by all the non-owners (logical rearrangements, adding in of missing signatures; importantly ''not'' correcting others' typos) although in the case of actual vandalism/etc (including undue editing of others' comments) then reversion/excising rights are there for the taking by whoever can deal with it.
:Beyond that, it's free-for-all 'improve or modify as you see fit' (as long as it is without malice!) around much of the rest of the wiki (the major exceptions being Community Portal pages to follow the regular Talk page examples, naturally).
:...anyway, to this loose 'ideal', and knowing that there's a(n almost) permanent record of historic changes, one can probably defer to the user for all bits of their User-spaces, but there are always going to be exceptions to this. And opportunities for a tussle. Now, John's got almost the same vintage here as myself (again, unprovably, but I've been semi-lurking/IP-posting here a ''lot'') and I've seen 42 gradually develop from newbie into the eager and eager-to-learn fresh face as they are now - including helping inform an even more recent newbie, recently. ;)
:Ultimately, it's community standards that are going to lead things. Developing concensus probably being more important than even other-Wikis' official standards, as I think there's room for flexibility of opinion. So long as there's no slide into either anarchy or totalitarianism. (And I'm not even sure I know which way round the two 'opposing' views here would represent, though then only if taken to their own particularly absurd extremes). You seem to be taking to heart the punctuation-before-the-Citation-needed standard (which is good, only sometimes it's even more complicated{{Citation needed}}),{{Citation needed}} but I see you recased an example of {{template|citation needed}} to {{template|Citation Needed}}, earlier. Now, it doesn't really matter because there are templates for "citation needed" and "Citation Needed". And also "cn" plus "fact" for the really lazy editors. ;) Anyway, all of these (maybe more, I'd have to check) redirect to the ''main'' "Citation needed" one. (Reflected in {{template|Actual citation needed}}, where "actual citation needed" ''plus'' "acn" redirect there, although {{template|Actual Citation Needed}} - "for completeness" - is actually a 'copy' template in its own right.) I wouldn't bother ''only'' changing various CN variations to "Citation needed"s (there ''is'' also a {{template|Citation neededs}}, but that's a '''s'''truckthrough version of "Citation needed" rather than an ungrammatical "Citation''s'' needed"!), but if you're already editing anything else, it would not at all hurt to get everything to capital-C small-n version. You're trying to be helpful, but... Anyone who ''really'' wants them will probably ask (or wait until they have page-creation rights themself). Looking at all the ones you've made for people, how many have even then been used (by the user concerned)? I suggest you don't need to create them, not even to un-redlink someone's [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?limit=50&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=Cleonis&namespace=&tagfilter=&start=&end= comic discussion] .sig links. It's normally not a big concern, and there's enough people who can help out if someone actually asks for it when you're not paying attention.
 As for the rest of us: ironically, I slightly wanted to drop a note to a long-term user the other day. (Comparatively, i.e. that they've been around for a bit longer than yourself.) They didn't have a User Talk page, so I resorted to a different way of commenting. They can create their own pages, if they want (and, if I was a username myself, I definitely could have by now). Yet I definitely wouldn't consider it valid to give the whole historic userbase any such 'missing' user-spaces.
 I'm no authority on this matter, or even a 'real user' in any properly identifiable way, but please do consider my advice that comes from long but informal experience of this kind of matter. You're not the first eager new contributor to try to help out like this. And you're not the first to have made the odd error (giving a spam-only account a Welcoming page ...which thankfully never got used to further the spamming, the account seemingly abandoned by that point ''anyway''), but of course this was probably before you even started lurking here (certainly before your current username, perhaps even prior to any IP-only-editing you might have done before that). Heck, some 'helpful' people even created the occasional User and/or User Talk spaces for IPs (don't do that, either, it's at best neutrally useless - even from my own IP-wise perspective).

There are two templates you can use. {{template|unsigned}} and {{template|unsigned ip}}. The most commonly used is the latter, so let's go with that.

Someone hasn't signed, and you think they should have, so you add <nowiki>{{unsigned ip}}</nowiki> to the end for them. It ends up looking (a bit) like:

You'll note that this looks... funny. That's because it actually expects/needs the relevent IP as a parameter, which is something you do with the pipe character, "|", and then the next bit. Adding <nowiki>{{unsigned ip|123.456.789.012}}</nowiki> to it. ''This'' now looks like:

That's better. But what IP should you add? Well, that's what you have to find out. And gives you one more bit of information that is also useful.

If you're already looking at the 'diff' page, for some reason, then you're already there. For the example I just saw you having difficulty with, though, I went looking for the appropriate diff information, which entailed working my way back through the history. I got to [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:84:_National_Language&diff=prev&oldid=200567 this page], which is the point at which the unsigned change was actually made. See the bit above the 'changed half' that says (with formatting and linefeed removed) "Revision as of 14:45, 26 October 2020 (edit) (undo) 172.69.216.142 (talk) (.) Newer edit →"? That's what's important.

(Check that the diff you're viewing isn't covering more than one change. Once you start using the "Newer edit" and "Older edit" links, you won't be, but if you got there straight from Recent Changes and the "<N> changes" link, then you're not going to be sure if the latest change is the one responsible. Better to go into History, start from there, or otherwise get into single-change comparison. If there aren't that many changes, within the last 24 hours (or default 50 changes) slot of history, you could go "Older edit" once, then go forward again in single steps. If it wasn't an older 'unsigned' than today, in which case you probably want to delve into the Older direction, anyway. Hoping it's not too far back!)

Anyway, there we have the IP, "172.69.216.142", which you can copy into the unsigned-template as its main parameter (If it's not an ip, responsible, but a username, then use the <nowiki>{{unsigned|</nowiki>''<username here>''}} version.) But you ''also'' have the timestamp (server timestamp, which is UTC, i.e. GMT±0). And actually the template lets you add a ''further'' parameter. If you write <nowiki>{{unsigned ip|172.69.216.142|14:45, 26 October 2020}}</nowiki>, for example, then you get:

...and that's basically what I consider the gold-plated 'correction'. Not quite ''solid'' gold, as a standard timestamp (e.g. the "19:52, 22 April 2024 (UTC)" for this particular post) will also say "(UTC)", to make it clear that this is the standard server time (rather than what timezone the editor concerned was working in, wherever in the world they were). But it's probably good enough, and so I don't ever bother to add the UTC-ness to the copypasted timestamp.

(I also back-adjusted the linefeed you'd managed to add in. All part of the service!) It's a simple edit, ''when you know how'', even if this explanation is lengthy. ''Or'', at least, use the Preview button and check whether what you thought were doing with [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:84:_National_Language&diff=prev&oldid=340332 your own initial edit] is going to appear as you wanted it to. Preview ''is'' your friend. I'm going to use it here, before I then Save Changes, just to sanity-check what I'm writing just now!

(I believe you actually tried to use the text ''<nowiki>(please sign your comments with ~~~~)</nowiki>'', but didn't know how to stop the <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> from being rendered. Well, if you ''really'' want to know how, then you can check this edit's source. But you don't actually need to know that, in this case, as the unsigned-templates do that for you. It's something else that's useful to know, but not for the unsignedness thing.)

Anyway, baby-steps. But I can see you're keen and often trying to be helpful. I'd never discourage that kind of attitude. Hence why I'm hoping the above is useful to you/anyone else who passes by. I would suggest not going out to hunt for 'unsigned comments', but only bother if you're hot on the heals of someone being forgetful (or honestly didn't know) ''or'' you're editing anyway and happen to be posting straight after a historic comment that you might think could look like it runs into your new comment, thus apparently 'adopts' your own sign-off, etc. Don't make work for yourself, but also you don't want to make future readers have to work out where different 'vintages' of comment are running into each other. But you ''also'' have the timestamp (server timestamp, which is UTC, i.e. GMT±0). And actually the template lets you add a ''further'' parameter. But it's probably good enough, and so I don't ever bother to add the UTC-ness to the copypasted timestamp.

There are two templates you can use. {{template|unsigned}} and {{template|unsigned ip}}. The most commonly used is the latter, so let's go with that.

Someone hasn't signed, and you think they should have, so you add <nowiki>{{unsigned ip}}</nowiki> to the end for them. It ends up looking (a bit) like:

You'll note that this looks... funny. That's because it actually expects/needs the relevent IP as a parameter, which is something you do with the pipe character, "|", and then the next bit. Adding <nowiki>{{unsigned ip|123.456.789.012}}</nowiki> to it. ''This'' now looks like:

That's better. But what IP should you add? Well, that's what you have to find out. And gives you one more bit of information that is also useful.

If you're already looking at the 'diff' page, for some reason, then you're already there. For the example I just saw you having difficulty with, though, I went looking for the appropriate diff information, which entailed working my way back through the history. I got to [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:84:_National_Language&diff=prev&oldid=200567 this page], which is the point at which the unsigned change was actually made. See the bit above the 'changed half' that says (with formatting and linefeed removed) "Revision as of 14:45, 26 October 2020 (edit) (undo) 172.69.216.142 (talk) (.) Newer edit →"? That's what's important.

(Check that the diff you're viewing isn't covering more than one change. Once you start using the "Newer edit" and "Older edit" links, you won't be, but if you got there straight from Recent Changes and the "<N> changes" link, then you're not going to be sure if the latest change is the one responsible. Better to go into History, start from there, or otherwise get into single-change comparison. If there aren't that many changes, within the last 24 hours (or default 50 changes) slot of history, you could go "Older edit" once, then go forward again in single steps. If it wasn't an older 'unsigned' than today, in which case you probably want to delve into the Older direction, anyway. Hoping it's not too far back!)

Anyway, there we have the IP, "172.69.216.142", which you can copy into the unsigned-template as its main parameter (If it's not an ip, responsible, but a username, then use the <nowiki>{{unsigned|</nowiki>''<username here>''}} version.) But you ''also'' have the timestamp (server timestamp, which is UTC, i.e. GMT±0). And actually the template lets you add a ''further'' parameter. If you write <nowiki>{{unsigned ip|172.69.216.142|14:45, 26 October 2020}}</nowiki>, for example, then you get:

...and that's basically what I consider the gold-plated 'correction'. == Escape Station game ==

Entering "START GAME" starts the game and gets the prompt "PLAY ESCAPE STATION? Y / N / OR ENTER CODE". From this point on the normal commands don't work. and the unkown command response is replaced by "INVALID COMMAND". Entering "N" cancel the game start ("ANOTHER TIME THEN"), I don't know what code(s) to enter. And entering "Y" starts the game ("YOU WAKE IN A WHITE BED IN A WHITE ROOM EXITS ARE OUT").

During the game it seems there are three game actions before the player drifts back to sleep and the station explodes, I haven't found commands that prevent station explosion, change the player status, prevent yawning or change the game score. The response on all game actions is followed by a yawming message and the text "EXITS ARE OUT"

Here are the commands I found so far :

* "HELP" -> "COMMON COMMANDS ARE LOOK INVENTORY OUT EXAMINE SOMETHING PRESS BUTTON GET SOMETHING FIRE SOMETHING QUIT" (does not count as a game action)

SIT UP to get out of bed.

You can use LOOK to look around in places, EXAMINE <something> to take a closer look at stuff, GET <something> to take items, INVENTORY to check what you are carrying, HELP lists common commands. The LOOK command also lists you your exits, these are the places you can go to from your current position, just type in the place to go there (for example, OUT).

The game is a bit buggy, sometimes you get a save point with a password, if the game glitches out type QUIT and START GAME and enter that password. So far I've gotten "WAFFLEHOUSEFRIES", "GARBAGERAMAN" and "KRAFTDINNER".

Go OUT and enter the LIFT.

Go to the lab (PRESS YELLOW BUTTON in lift), GET the bottle from the table, OPEN BOX to receive a goo cannon, don't take the book as that will kill you as soon as you exit the lab.

Get back to the lift, go to the shuttle bay (brown button in lift), GET SONIC PULSER and LARGE BLUE LASER from the workbench, don't go in to the RIGHT lifepod as that kills you. You can enter the SHUTTLE, SIT COUCH to sit in the pilot's couch, EXAMINE DISPLAY, couldn't figure out anything else to do inside. Supposedly the shuttle's computer "accepts verbal commands", couldn't figure out any.

Get back to the lift, go to the cantina floor (purple button), immediately FIRE SONIC PULSER (or you die), enter CANTINA, FIRE SONIC PULSER again (or you die, probably), GET RUBBER BALL, EXAMINE TABLE, EXAMINE BODIES, GET BADGE. At this point you'll get the save point KRAFTDINNER (with a score of 35) upon exiting OUT of the cantina, and your INVENTORY should contain these items: A SONIC PULSER A LARGE BLUE LASER A RUBBER BALL A BADGE A BOTTLE AND A GOO CANNON.

Now you can access the red floor, but there's a deadly alien there, you can escape back into the LIFT, couldn't figure out what else you can do.

Firing the GOO CANNON or LARGE BLUE LASER insta-kills you everywhere I tried so far, including on the red floor with the alien (albeit with a different message). Maybe there's a way to read the book in the lab to learn how to use the goo cannon without dying?

You can OPEN BOTTLE to take the space pills in the inventory, but so far the game said that "this is not the time or place for space drugs" anywhere I tried.

The BLUE floor seems to be impassable, you can only get back into the lift.

The ORANGE floor kills you.

From here on I'm guessing you're supposed to either find a way to deal with the alien on the bridge on red floor, figure out how to open the blast doors of the left lifepod in the bay (brown floor), or figure out how to work the shuttle. Please post if you make more progress.

: On the BLUE floor you can OPEN BOTTLE and you will see a message "YOU SWALLOW THE SPACE PILLS AND DISCARD THE BOTTLE YOUR EYES SWIM AND EARS POP" then you can progress into engineering and access a terminal.
On the terminal is a MICROPHONE and a note that says "AT TOGGLE POKER CANNON WITH COMMANDER TO BACK CHANGE SOON MODES" which I assume has something to do with the cantina. If you PRESS BUTTON, you will be prompted to "DISPENSE?", but entering a command will cancel the prompt. I'm fairly sure that the maze is a reference to Nethack, a roguelike dungeon crawler. After you PRESS BUTTON, if you respond "YES" it will dispense an item which you will find is an EVA suit, now in your inventory. After you exit you'll get the code "GRILLEDCHEESEWITHBACON".
Afterwards you can return to the lift, wear the EVA suit and go to the orange floor. There you find a corridor with a tear in it, can't figure out yet what to do there... [[User:Boefjim|Boefjim]] ([[User talk:Boefjim|talk]]) 09:45, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Done some further investigation, the note says to switch the goo cannon, so after WEAR EVA SUIT in the lift and going to the orange floor, you should TOGGLE GOO CANNON and FIRE GOO CANNON which fixes the tear.
You can then continue to SYSTEM DEFENSE where you PUSH SKELETON with a note called "THE OMEGA CODE", reading it seems to kill you in most situations so far. You can then PRESS BUTTON to active point defense. Leaving the orange floor will give you the code "KAREAGEDON" you can then safely go up to the red floor and FIRE GOO CANNON to kill the alien, which will give you the save code "PEIKINGRAVIOLI ".
On the red floor you can SIT ON COUCH and PRESS BUTTON to toggle shields, seems to have no influence as long as the system defense is also on. EXAMINE COUCH however says that the couch is lumpy and uncomfortable. I am suspecting there is some way to get an item from the couch but no idea what command to send to do so. Huh, you can SEARCH COUCH and you find a metal cube! It is "A DULL METAL CUBE WITH MARKINGS THAT READ STAYALIVE IFF TRANSPONDER MODEL 3235 DASH B". Speculation: if you turn off the shields while the system defense is on, it will eventually be safe(r) to leave the station in the shuttle, if you have the IFF transponder (because you won't bump into the shields, and the transponder will stop the system defense from shooting you). Maybe. Some current remaining mysteries:
(1) Could you do anything else in engineering apart from getting the EVA suit? Is there a way to break the safety glass? Is there a way to speak into the microphone? Once you've left engineering, you can't come back again (because you get dizzy but no longer have any pills).
(2) If you go back to your room (green level), it says that it's so white that you can't see anything. Is there a way to make it less white so that you potentially could see some object?
(3) Still wondering about the left escape pod door and/or the voice control for the shuttle on the brown level.
(4) What's the deal with finding an intact envelope?
(5) What's the deal with the pool of water in the laboratory and the laboratory notebook?

OK, I got something else (which may constitute victory!). From PEIKINGRAVIOLI, you can SIT ON COUCH, SEARCH COUCH, PRESS BUTTON (disabling the shields). If you then go back to your room (green level), you can GET WHITE ENVELOPE (you have to guess that it is there, since you can't see it). Then you can go to the shuttle bay (brown level), get in the shuttle, and READ ENVELOPE to the computer. You can then PRESS BUTTON and it then attempts to take you back through space to return your rented movie, and you escape from the station. (The cube from the couch on the red level is necessary in order not to be viewed as hostile while making your escape.) As we haven't apparently used the laser, omega code, rubber ball, or puddle, I wonder if there's more game content or subplots still to be found. It seems that the comic is no longer interactive. It's been replaced by a GIF that simply alternates between checked and unchecked. There are two templates you can use. {{template|unsigned}} and {{template|unsigned ip}}. The most commonly used is the latter, so let's go with that.

Someone hasn't signed, and you think they should have, so you add <nowiki>{{unsigned ip}}</nowiki> to the end for them. It ends up looking (a bit) like:

You'll note that this looks... funny. That's because it actually expects/needs the relevent IP as a parameter, which is something you do with the pipe character, "|", and then the next bit. Adding <nowiki>{{unsigned ip|123.456.789.012}}</nowiki> to it. ''This'' now looks like:

That's better. But what IP should you add? Well, that's what you have to find out. And gives you one more bit of information that is also useful.

If you're already looking at the 'diff' page, for some reason, then you're already there. For the example I just saw you having difficulty with, though, I went looking for the appropriate diff information, which entailed working my way back through the history. I got to [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:84:_National_Language&diff=prev&oldid=200567 this page], which is the point at which the unsigned change was actually made. See the bit above the 'changed half' that says (with formatting and linefeed removed) "Revision as of 14:45, 26 October 2020 (edit) (undo) 172.69.216.142 (talk) (.) Newer edit →"? That's what's important.

(Check that the diff you're viewing isn't covering more than one change. Once you start using the "Newer edit" and "Older edit" links, you won't be, but if you got there straight from Recent Changes and the "<N> changes" link, then you're not going to be sure if the latest change is the one responsible. Better to go into History, start from there, or otherwise get into single-change comparison. If there aren't that many changes, within the last 24 hours (or default 50 changes) slot of history, you could go "Older edit" once, then go forward again in single steps. If it wasn't an older 'unsigned' than today, in which case you probably want to delve into the Older direction, anyway. Hoping it's not too far back!)

...and that's basically what I consider the gold-plated 'correction'. Not quite ''solid'' gold, as a standard timestamp (e.g. the "19:52, 22 April 2024 (UTC)" for this particular post) will also say "(UTC)", to make it clear that this is the standard server time (rather than what timezone the editor concerned was working in, wherever in the world they were). But it's probably good enough, and so I don't ever bother to add the UTC-ness to the copypasted timestamp.
