This comic came out early. They don't usually go live till around noon my time. It's 1:20 AM. Blacksilver (talk) 05:21, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
:Yes, quite early, but about once a month or something it happens. Randall never has fixed upload times. So it is not really uncommon. --Lupo (talk) 07:46, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
::It used to be that the comics would come online in the early US hours (morning for Europe), but about 1 year ago this shifted to morning US / mid-afternoon Europe, with some exceptions.141.101.99.203 10:26, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
I have noticed that in several comics Randall doesn't draw a frame around every panel, like panel 5 in this case. Is there any meaning behind this or is it just a random artistic choice? Bischoff (talk) 09:32, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
:I think it is a choice, but not random. It gives a certain flow to the comic. He does this a lot. I have begun writing it in the transcript, as I did here (someone else did it partially but I corrected it to "frame-less panel". A quick search showed 79 pages using this sentence. So it is quite common, as I have certainly not been around all of the comics doing this. However, I'm probably the one that have edited most transcripts (as the one with the most edits on this wiki, who on top of that has specialized in making the transcripts complete. ;-) --Kynde (talk) 09:55, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
I didn't really get this explanation. It doesn't really _explain_ why the response is made of whizzing sounds, no? Wouldn't the point of the explanation be to explain the comic? 162.158.114.52 16:10, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
:Well, it's not technically chocolate, but it is a derivative -- insert math joke -- and the chart doesn't seem to be concerned with what it is, just with what it's called; after all, that which is called white chocolate by any other name would taste just as sweet, putting some off while others enjoy it. "In the title text, Randall asserts that his rankings of colors and foods are indisputable (with the exception of chocolate). This is of course ridiculous, as everyone knows that watermelon and strawberry are inherently superior to the likes of Citrus Fruits."...but his rankings of strawberry and of watermelon (x2) are higher than for oranges, lemons, and limes. There is no contradiction here; nothing that is ridiculous. 162.158.78.118 16:29, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
:: Sweet liquorice, or salted? I'm pretty sure there should be two dots there. Also, coffee and chocolate are both missing from the right end of the 'black' row. Hmm. The selection seems quite diverse compared to a standard bag of jelly beans, but doesn't really cover the range of a gourmet brand. I wonder where root beer falls, or Dr Pepper. And that's not even getting into color classification when the bean has more than one color. Personally, when I used to get gourmet jelly bean brands, I would do the squeeze-and-sniff test on a particular shade of brown, because it was used for both coffee and a flavor I liked. I remember Lore Sjöberg having a similar problem with cinnamon and cherry, but if he ever arrived at my solution, I don't know. Nyperold (talk) 16:44, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
My tastes now rate sweet tastes poorly - as well as sour, so I would down rate candyfloss, but not up rate lemon. The variability of chocolate represents the range from choc flavoured sweet margarine, through to 90% coco solids. My peak preference being about 50-60%. Wait, lemons? I like lemons. Anyone with an excess of raw lemons for eating should send me them. I would eat them consistently if it weren't for the fact that doing so makes my gums sore afterwards. I've several times distilled lemon juice into a much, much stronger "lemon syrup" with about 1/10th the volume and the consistency of maple syrup, and my general feeling is that I would eat it like candy if it were widely available, even though it has virtually no sugar in it. Today's cartoon is the fifth xkcd Phone with many questionably-useful features:

Table of features
{| class="wikitable"
!Feature
!Explanation
|-
|Bluetooth speaker
| This is the only potentially useful feature of this phone as while a bluetooth speaker built in to the device would be no more useful for playing music from it than any other speaker it would enable other devices to play through your phone.
|-
|Stained glass display
| Prevents seeing certain colors. This would also make the phone considerably heavier due to the weight of the glass.
|-
|Gallium chassis
| It has a melting point of 85°F (or 29.7°C), making it impossible to be carried on the bare skin.
|-
|Soundproof
| Presumably this means that speakers and microphone may not work.
|-
|Can feel pain
| This would presumably become apparent when the chassis melts on contact with exposed skin and the phone is left with open wounds.
|-
|E-Z Pass partnership
|E-Z Pass is an account you put money into and you put a transmitter in your windshield so when you go through a toll booth you don't have to stop and pay by hand.
|-
|Foldable (once)
|Presumably you can "fold" it by snapping it in half but you can only do his once because the phone wont work otherwise
|-
|Screen transfers images to skin
| This could either mean the image displayed on the screen or potentially whatever the stained glass image itself is.
|-
|Retina storage
|
|-
|Background task automatically catches and eats Pokemon
|
|-
|Supercuts partnership
|
|-
|Squeltch knob
|
|-
|IBM bukcling-spring Home button
|
|-
|Cot-caught merger switch
|
|-
|60x optical zoom camera
|
|-
|Loran navigation
| Once developed for sea shipping, it enables navigation by land-based radio transmitters and is accurate to about 300 meters.
|-
|28-factor authentication
|
|-
|Hook shot
| Either a reference to the basketball shot or the Legend of Zelda weapon/tool, used to bring items to Link or bring Link closer to a goal.
Black background...huh? GoonPontoon (talk) 18:27, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
: The xkcd Browser Android app, at least, uses black outside the rectangular comic image for this one instead of the usual white. It usually does that for dark-background comics like 312. I don’t know if it gets the color from the site somehow or uses its own heuristics, but either way this isn’t the first time it’s made the “wrong” choice. --162.158.78.148 18:40, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
