Stephen Page and Ed Robertson were amusing themselves at a boring gig by pretending to be tiresome rock critics namechecking fictitious obscure bands. Barenaked Ladies was one of them. When a promoter for a local battle-of-the-bands phoned Ed to confirm his band were still playing, they'd split up, but he said he'd formed a new band with Stephen (but they hadn't), and tried to remember one of their made up names. BNL was the only one he could recall.
