I doubt the Notre Dame story other people mentioned is the only example of reporters trying a bit too hard to make stories personal/relatable.  I don't have an art degree but knew that the painting was on wood. Also, it's "J.C. Penney". I'm guessing Randall was in a hurry on this one.
