Hairy is certainly being shown Ponytail's room for the first time, so the phrase makes literal sense. However, it is also clear that Hairy planned to spend the night, and in this context between adults the connotation that they were going to sleep together makes the literal statement seem quite out of place (and naïve/purposely ignorant for the sake of politeness). The quotation marks highlight the literal text, to show that it understands the euphemism, much like their normal use to show that something is not written as part of the text but as a transcription of someone's speech. Of course, maybe Hairy *is* just a friend that was staying over, but this is much less likely than the other interpretation.
