The exact mechanism for TENS is not known, but Nerve Renew some scientists believe the electrical pulses emitted by TENS, blocks or over-ride the pain messages traveling to the brain. Other scientists believe the electrical impulses trigger the release of the body's natural pain-relieving opiates called endorphins and enkephalins. Some of these substances, isolated, have been found to be 200 times stronger than morphine.Clinical studies have shown seven out of ten pain suffers can expect pain relief from TENS therapy. The major health funds in Australia are so convinced of the effectiveness of TENS therapy that generous rebates apply to the purchase of all types of TENS units. Before using a TENS unit ensure you thoroughly clean the application area of skin and remove any excess hair if possible. Hair and dirt will reduce the electrical conductivity of the TENS (electrode) pads and will also reduce the working lifetimes of the pads. For best results, thoroughly clean skin with soap and water, dry and then swab with an alcohol based wipe. This helps to remove dirt and grease from the skin.
