It can develop at any age, however, the onset usually occurs before the patient turns 30 years old. Most patients are diagnosed before age 20. Type 1 used to be called juvenile diabetes. There does seem to be a genetic predisposition but there are many who do not have any family members that have ever had type 1 diabetes.
