:I don't know why you think that there's no point. Some people have a stable IP, some people don't. Those that do will be shown the talk page automatically by MediaWiki. And others monitor [[Special:RecentChanges]], as this IP editor may have (and as you did). And furthermore, the talk page was linked from [[:User talk:Barmar]] in the thread the IP user was using.
