The diaeresis is not the same as the umlaut like the description suggests. They're different symbols with different purposes that just happen to look the same. The diaeresis is used to indicate a syllable break before the vowel it's placed on (e.g. naïve), and the umlaut modifies the sound of the vowel it's placed on (e.g. Übermensch).
