Nicotinamide is a ready-for-the-body form of niacin, also known as Vitamin B3. This B vitamin plays a vital role in energy production from glucose. Along with R-lipoic acid and biotin, nicotinamide protects the energy producing centers of the cell from the toxic effects of free radicals, allowing the cell to become more sensitive to insulin. This makes nicotinamide very useful in treating Type 2 diabetes... but increasing insulin sensitivity is not its only benefit.
Nicotinamide also delays or prevents the biochemical processes that lead to cell death. In Type 2 diabetics, excessive sugar in their bloodstream can react with other blood chemicals to release free radicals of oxygen. These oxidants literally make tiny tears in the outer lining of cells, exposing a building block of the cell membrane known as phosphatidylserine. Tearing the outer lining of the cell triggers an inflammatory process that destroys the DNA of the cell, preparing it for death. Nicotinamide can interrupt this process so that brain cells, heart cells, and insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas have a chance to repair themselves and return to healthy function.
