It seems pretty clear to me that this equation is a mash-up of physical kinematics with Michaelis-Menten kinetics (enzyme kinetics). Those equations use both velocity (of reaction) and K (K<sub>M</sub>) as well as subscripts (e.g. v<sub>0</sub>, v<sub>max</sub>); and while density is commonly not included it's not quite as out-of-the-blue for this field as it is in "regular" kinematics.
