Explain xkcd: It's 'cause you're dumb.
Jump to: navigation, search

I'm hopeful that at some point the "history" section of this article can be filled in with more comic history like how Randall started it, changes to the days it was posted, changes to the xkcd website etc, notable recognition and events; and that the stuff that is already under "history" can be moved to a subsection on the history of the style of xkcd. Unless there's an objection, under "Meaning of xkcd" I'd like to rephrase the reference to The Hithhiker's Guide to the Galaxy so it refers to the novel/radio play primarily, and not the movie version. Those are the versions that became legendary in the science fiction community and established the fanbase for the franchise (including the reverence for the number 42), and Randall was almost certainly familiar with them before the movie. I would of course maintain the mention of the movie and its release date, since that's a cool piece of related trivia. - jerodast (talk) 23:34, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

So, which is the vandalism?[edit]

I've just reverted from a blanked page to a page with the traditional info on it. But the page-blanker IP (indistinguishable from the page-undoing-to-non-blank IP) seems to be commenting that they are undoing vandalism. SFAICT, they are undoing restored stuff that should be there (no obvious spam/scam content!) and then being reundone (same person? certainly same internet gateway...) without comment. If it's "for da lulz" it aint funny. If it's a genuine error than I hope they pay attention. If I'm wrong (fairly sure I'm not), tell me the problem! 172.70.85.79 12:38, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure it's just some troll, they've been doing it for quite some time now 256.256.256.256 (talk) 09:26, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Well, to be fair, I think it's several trolls (across time). There are a truly phenomenal number of accounts created (to various semi-identifiable patterns), many of which are never used, a few of which do one (silly) thing and no more. Occasionally they take several awkward goes to do the silly thing (NB. I include my own reversion in that span of changes!) and there was certainly one person with at least two vandalising accounts.
The pattern of vandalism/spamdalism is clearly pointing to a variety of bad actors out there. And no possible deterence by named-account restrictions, for those determined to dodge those problems. Luckily, even as an IP (and being the 172.70.85.79 above, in case that's not clear) I can revert much of what I happen to first notice. As I have been, when I'm able, for quite a while now.
((No, don't thank me. If I didn't catch these things, surely others would - and do - and I probably also add far more Explanation material that also ends up re-written 'better', never mind my rambling Talk contributions. ;) I dread to think where I would have appeared on that Top TenNine, list, if I could have been so easily isolated and identified))
Anyway... Don't mind me. Long-time editor, longer time comic-reader. Enjoying xkcd and explainxkcd, but occasionally cynical about how the wider trollosphere getting mud on the carpet. So long as people know, though. I think I saw yourself having reverted something or other, in the last few hours, and certainly corrected things. It's what we can do, and as long as someone does... Forgive my rambling on about this, I've really already made any point I had quite a while ago. 172.70.86.68 15:22, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

There's one troll blanking this page, and sometimes unblanking it; he has never created an account. 172.70.131.122 (talk) (please sign your comments with ~~~~)

As one of those who has unblanked it (not the only one), I'm not sure the blanker has unblanked it at all, it's just me and any other random anonIP who spot the blanking and undo it. The thing is that I don't need an account to repair the damage, but neither would I need one to apply it in the first place (should I ever be so inclined), so it's going to be a continuing problem (and temporary solution). 172.70.91.126 21:27, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
No, some of the unblankings were done by the vandal. 172.70.131.214 21:29, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Hard to say for sure. Funelled through the Cloudflare gateways, even if it's the same IP within a few minutes, it could still be a more thoughtful person. I grant you that the very latest one, that I've only actually just seen myself, probably was (same minute), but even then not necessarily. Only one person will know for sure, though. And know why they even bothered. Meh. 172.70.91.126 21:37, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Some of the reverts, including the most recent one and all the ones done by the same IP as the blanker they reverted, were definitely done by the vandal. 172.70.126.65 21:56, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
