I know you are not a newbie and so I would like to see your opinions at this talk page: explain xkcd talk:Editor FAQ. The main issues right now are tables and headings. While avoiding tables seems to be consensus the headers are a more difficult issue. I try to keep this as simple as possible while a good layout is the final goal. Not easy. You know, I'd be absolutely astonished (and very concerned) if I randomly visited any website and I ended up answering a call from those who run it. Not withstanding that it's something we'd never want here (or to advertise on here, despite the best efforts of 'Eric') I can't believe it even works. And if it does work, it shouldn't! 'Latest comic' trouble.

You might be interested to know that the "Go to latest comic" mechanism still worked (sidebar, and "|>" button worked on all comics priot to 2871). The fault appears not to be with 2872 (or incorrect "2871: Page Name"), but in the refreshing/caching mechanism for the established 2871: Page Name page.

However, as I was investigating it for myself, it actually started working as it should. I was forcing refreshing, which might actually have nudged the on-site-cache, but I'm really not sure if I had anything to do with it. But you don't need to worry about it any more. "What the hell is that page?"

Someone (probably of the same someone(s) who has a like for Conlangs, and at least at one point had avwiki of their own to mess about with) decided that the best way to protect certain oft-vandalised pages was to create User pages duplicating them and sort of have a login that would "shadow" the real page and (possibly?) restore the damaged one if ever they needed to. Despite regular user interventions (and the likes of theusafBOT) already handling such issues at least as quickly as having a 'designated protector'. – I'm still not entirely sure how serious those involved were. Always troubled me.

Now, we hadn't had much 'overt' Conlanging content done much recently (the usernames involved were almost, if not entirely, absent). And various other editing patterns were quieter than they have been. And, suddenly, we're getting Conlang-type accounts making edits (some 'useful', but some being reactive to revert minor anonymous vandalisms suspiciously quickly and direct, and a handful of other 'meh' edits that might even require further attention to make them work.

My theory is that there is a small group of... commonly purposed collaborators, I'm going to charitably say... who have suddenly remembered that this place is where they once came to poke around and store lists, store linguistic snippets and... well, probably more purposes than I've worked out (and I've got a number of theories, beyond that). But all more self-indulgent/performative than otherwise might be contributors like thee and me.

Barring the worst/most careless changes, I'm resigned to some of the tweaks (especially those that clearly sought out truly needed edits, like derepeating accidentally releated words) being left as they end up. Which perhaps irks me, when they make no net improvement, as at least when it goes wrong it can be reverted or differently improved. But it's probably subjective. Even if I would oxcasionally add a Page To Be Deleted marker, occasiinally, I'm under no illusion that this would be acted upon as nevcessary. 172.70.85.103 23:44, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
