This is a non-numbered April fools' comic, and is the first April fools' joke preformed on xkcd. This comic, formatted similarly to other posts such as Blue Eyes. The post describes xkcd becoming syndicated into a newspaper, changing from a webcomic. Newspapers are notorious for censorship of content, and Randal describes all the changes that would be required of the comic, the humor coming from their progressive absurdity.
List of Changes proposed by Randell
# | Change | Explanation | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Cultural References that would be lost on the average newspaper reader | This proposal was made because the average newspaper reader is not likely to know obscure or niche references to certain works of art or media. | |
2 | Mathematics above the high-school level | This proposal was made because to the average reader, they are likely to not remember much about Collage level mathematics. | |
3 | Obscure scientific subjects | It is not likely for most people who read a newspaper to understand Quantum Mechanics, or Particle Physics. | |
4 | Overt sexual material | Such content is not likely to be received well by newspaper readers, especially if they are looking at the paper with others around. | |
5 | Objectionable words such as fuck, shit, cunt, ass, tits, cock, scrotum, bitch, Belgium, pussy, or twat | Profanity's, as they are known, are a group of words that are meant as either a form of insult, or as a response to certain situations like pain. The word doesn't necessarily have to be part of the profanity group, but can still be offensive if used out of context. It is noted that Belgium ended up in this list for unknown reasons, though it is likely that it was done out of humor.

DiscussionWhere is this coming from? was this actually online in 2007? Between comics 242 and 243? --Lupo (talk) 08:08, 18 November 2019 (UTC) Can we discuss the jokes in this comic, like Belgium jokingly being considered a swear word?108.162.216.196 20:12, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Alright, nobody has touched this for quite a while now, so I might as well. I kinda expected this page to be finished, but it is amazingly not so. 172.68.47.234 09:50, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
I switched the big table to a format that is more readable on smaller screens, as per the Editor FAQ §3, and added some more explanations in the process. Hope that's in everyone's interest. I also fixed up the broken Unicode (at first, I thought it was part of The Joke, but it is also correct in the archived forum thread.) -- //gir.st/ (talk) 22:19, 7 May 2020 (UTC) Question: do we really need to explain every. single. one. of those items? the ones that are missing all fall into the "this is funny because it's random" (see also: 1210) category, imo. -- //gir.st/ (talk) 22:19, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
